So, I was reading through a Reddit Q&A with director Carlos López Estrada, and he let slip some news: Disney has decided not to move forward with that live-action Robin Hood movie. Honestly, it’s a bit surprising, especially with Zootopia 2 absolutely crushing it at the box office. You’d think they’d be all-in on talking animal films right now, but apparently not.
When asked how the project was going, Estrada said it was unfortunately cancelled, but noted he still thought it had potential, particularly because of the amazing music they had developed for it.
Robin Hood at Disney
The classic animated film Robin Hood came out in 1973. It was especially notable as the first full-length animated movie Disney created after Walt Disney passed away. Actor Brian Bedford, known for his work on stage, voiced the character of Robin Hood, who was designed as a fox. Disney veteran Phil Harris, famous for his roles in other animated films, provided the voice for Little John, a bear.

The movie featured a mix of British stage actors, including Peter Ustinov, and American actors famous for westerns. Adding to the diverse cast, country singer Roger Miller played and voiced the character of Allan-a-Dale the rooster, and he also composed three original songs for the film.
In early 2020, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that actor Estrada would be starring in a new version of the 1970s animal adventure film. The plan was to create Robin Hood as a mix of live-action and computer-generated imagery, and release it directly on Disney+ like other live-action remakes such as Lady and the Tramp.
After the disappointing box office performance of the 2025 live-action Snow White, Disney seemed hesitant about making more live-action remakes. However, The Hollywood Reporter says a live-action version of Tangled is moving forward again. Plus, Disney is also developing a live-action spin-off focused on the Beauty and the Beast villain Gaston, and a remake of Hercules directed by Guy Ritchie.

However, the strong performance of Zootopia 2 has led many to think Disney might follow its example and create more movies featuring talking animals.
Zootopia 2’s Success Vs. Mufasa’s Failure
Disney has always loved telling stories about talking animals. Classics like Robin Hood and The Lion King, as well as newer films such as Zootopia, use animal characters to cleverly combine fantasy, comedy, and important social themes – something that’s often more challenging to do in movies with both live actors and animation. This creative freedom has made many of Disney’s animated animal films incredibly popular and long-lasting.
Wow, Disney really knocked it out of the park with Zootopia 2! As a moviegoer, I wasn’t surprised to hear it became a record-breaker – it hit $1 billion faster than any other PG-rated film ever. And the numbers don’t lie: it’s officially Walt Disney Animation’s biggest hit, bringing in a whopping $1.46 billion worldwide. It’s a truly phenomenal success!

Disney’s recent Mufasa, a prequel to the live-action Lion King, cost around $383 million to make. Although it earned about $400 million worldwide, the film probably didn’t make a profit. Studios usually need to earn double the production cost to cover marketing and break even, and Mufasa likely fell short of that. Because of the Mufasa result, Disney might be proceeding cautiously with Robin Hood, rather than confidently expecting success with a Zootopia 2.
Although the animated film Robin Hood is still beloved, a live-action version probably won’t happen. Disney appears to be focusing on fully animated movies like Zootopia 2, which are popular worldwide, hinting that talking animals are most effective when presented in animation.
