Director, the filmmaker known for two incredibly popular action films – The Raid and The Raid 2 – has finished filming his new take on a well-known Japanese crime thriller. If that wasn’t already great news, the impressive list of actors in the remake has now been announced. And you’re going to be amazed by who’s in it.
Gareth Evans, known for directing Tom Hardy in the action film Havoc (available on Netflix) and an Academy Award nominee, is revisiting the 1967 yakuza thriller by director Takashi Nomura. The story centers on a hitman tasked by a gang leader to eliminate a competing boss. According to Deadline, Evans will once again work with a star from Gangs of London, who will play the role of the assassin who finds himself on the run.
The impressive supporting cast features Oscar nominee Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction), Jack Reynor (Midsommar), Lucy Boynton (Bohemian Rhapsody), Victor Alli, (Bridgerton) Ewan Mitchell (The Last Kingdom), Burn Gorman (Beetlejuice Beetlejuice) and Noah Taylor (Edge Of Tomorrow). Amazon MGM Studios is producing this new version of A Colt is My Passport, and the story details are available below…
I’m really excited about the upcoming update to Takashi Nomura’s gritty noir story! It’s going to be set in 1978 Detroit and follows Colt, a Vietnam veteran who now works as a contract killer. The story kicks off when he takes out a major gang boss and is forced to go on the run. It sounds absolutely thrilling!

Those familiar with Sope Dìrísù’s performance as Elliot Carter, the undercover officer in Gangs of London, will agree he’s well-suited to star in an action film, and it’s great to see him taking on a leading role. In addition to Dìrísù, Evans will again collaborate with writer Chris Webb, who was a stunt performer on both Havoc and the horror film Apostle. Evans has also shared details about his upcoming remake of A Colt is My Passport, mentioning he immediately “fell in love” with the 1960s original and its unique “bold fusion of genres.”
I was immediately captivated by Takashi Nomura’s groundbreaking film, A Colt Is My Passport, and its daring blend of genres. The way it combined elements of film noir and spaghetti westerns was so compelling that I knew right away I wanted to make it my next movie. Rather than simply recreating the original, Chris Webb’s exceptional, noir-infused script offers a reimagining. It expands on the original film’s central ideas, giving the story’s memorable characters greater emotional depth while still honoring its strong genre roots. It’s a really exciting project!
Working with the amazing cast – including Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù, Jack Reynor, Lucy Boynton, Victor Alli, Burn Gorman, and Tim Roth – has been a true pleasure. Their commitment to bringing the film’s vision to life was incredibly inspiring, making the past 12 weeks of filming both fulfilling and energizing. I’m immensely thankful for the confidence Orion has placed in us, and I can’t wait to share this boldly creative film with viewers around the globe.”
