Did the Goo Goo Dolls Get a Love Island Boost?

This season of *Love Island USA* brought some unexpected moments – like the constant use of the term ‘girl’s girl,’ a renewed appreciation for breakfast, and a lot of podcast interviews. But a surprising highlight came from islander TJ Palma. Just before he was eliminated, he used the Goo Goo Dolls‘ song “Iris” in a TikTok video, and it might just become the song of the summer! He created a compilation of his relationship with Iris Kendall set to the song, and fans quickly joined in, hoping they’d reconcile after the show. Interestingly, Iris had previously shared a video referencing being someone’s “Iris.” And, adding to the connection, she was born in 1999, only a year after the song was originally released.

“Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls has seen a major surge in popularity this summer, attracting both new and longtime listeners. The song recently reached number 9 on the Spotify Global Streaming chart (and number 12 on the weekly chart), and it’s also made its debut on the Billboard streaming charts in July. It’s remained on the Billboard chart for the past 12 weeks, peaking at number 39 and currently sitting at number 46. While originally released in 1998, “Iris” continues to find new audiences through streaming platforms.

Though “Iris” is currently gaining a lot of popularity on streaming services this summer, its comeback actually began last year. It was featured in the soundtrack for *Deadpool & Wolverine* in July 2024 and in season two of *Shrinking*. The band even played the song live at Demi Lovato’s wedding in May 2025. Since then, TikTok users, especially those sharing romantic content, have embraced the song, with videos using it gaining millions of views – including some posted by the band themselves. While “Iris” has been a beloved romantic ballad for twenty years, it’s now reaching a new, younger audience who may not be familiar with the original *City of Angels* film. The Goo Goo Dolls may not have wanted the spotlight in 1998, but they might appreciate all the attention in 2025.
