In episode 5 of ‘The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox‘, titled ‘Mr. Nobody’, the narrative delves into Raffaele Sollecito’s past and shows the details of his interrogation, demonstrating that his alleged switch in alibi was not just a simple act of deceit.

The recently released Hulu series focuses on the heartbreaking 2007 murder of British student Meredith Kercher during her stay in Perugia, Italy. Though Rudy Guede was the lone offender, Amanda Knox and her Italian partner Raffaele Sollecito were wrongly accused and convicted.

Following this incident, there ensued an unprecedented whirlwind in the media. Knox was portrayed as a sexually depraved figure dubbed “Luciferina” by both the press and prosecutors, while Sollecito was branded merely her “puppet”, despite the lack of substantiating evidence linking them to the crime.

Instead of relying mainly on indirect allegations and varying witness statements, the defense consistently emphasized the lack of concrete forensic proof linking the two individuals to the murder of Kercher. Additionally, they highlighted potential issues with initial police investigations that may have influenced the initial case build-up.

Did Raffaele Sollecito lie?

Initially, let’s focus on the murder case involving Sollecito and Kercher. Contrary to accusations, Sollecito was not found to have lied about participating in Kercher’s murder. He was initially convicted with Knox in 2009, but after numerous appeals, both were declared innocent by Italy’s Supreme Court in 2015.

For almost four years, Sollecito was imprisoned before being declared not guilty, and no physical proof connected him to the crime throughout his confinement. The uncertainties about his statements mainly arise from his alibi; however, this becomes more comprehensible in The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox.

On the evening of November 5th, 2007, Sollecito underwent extensive questioning for several hours without legal representation. Initially, he maintained that he spent the night with Knox at home, sharing his bed with her, and that they were together throughout the entire night.

When faced with pressure, there seemed to be a discrepancy in his statement as he suggested she might have departed his apartment unnoticed by him. This ambiguity caught the attention of the police, leading them to inform Amanda Knox that her boyfriend was implicating her in some way.

In his own words, Sollecito found the encounter disconcerting and pressuring. He stated that police officers disparaged Knox in front of him and threatened that his situation would not turn out favorably if he wasn’t being truthful – all this despite Sollecito knowing what transpired that evening.

In a 2016 Netflix documentary titled Amanda Knox, he stated that he accompanied Knox to the police station for interrogation.

As the conversation went on, I found myself being treated disrespectfully and grilled about the events of that evening,” I found myself saying. (In this context, ‘grilled’ means questioned intensely or harshly.)

That evening, I’m certain I stayed at my apartment. I also believe I spent the night with Amanda and she shared a bed with me. However, their behavior was far from acceptable – they were demanding, pushy, and eventually turned into the most unruly individuals.

The police officer shared with me that Amanda frequently lied, referring to her as unintelligent and uncaring. He described her behavior negatively, stating she didn’t value me. He emphasized that my circumstances were extremely dire. Over time, the truth around me seemed to become distorted and less clear.

Under increasing scrutiny, Sollecito adjusted his account, which subsequently allowed the investigators to employ similar strategies with Knox. Later, he claimed that his initial declaration was indeed truthful.

Where is Raffaele Sollecito now?

In the latest TV series, the character Sollecito, portrayed by Giuseppe De Domenico, is now residing in Portugal. He has established a flourishing career there as a skilled software engineer, particularly proficient in cloud and hybrid systems architecture.
