The third season of Ryan Murphy’s ‘Monster’ premiered on Netflix on October 3rd. This season tells the story of Ed Gein, a man who lived a secluded life on a run-down farm in Wisconsin during the 1950s. He concealed terrifying secrets that forever changed the landscape of American horror.
Did Ed Gein help solve the Ted Bundy case?
The most recent episode of Monster: The Ed Gein Story briefly featured Ted Bundy and suggested Ed Gein may have played a role in his capture. This has left many viewers questioning what actually happened, so we’re here to clarify the facts.
Despite a common misconception, Ed Gein wasn’t involved in the arrest of Ted Bundy, the serial killer who operated during the 1970s.
The TV series used a fictional story to help viewers understand Gein’s schizophrenia. Gein struggled to distinguish between what was real and what he imagined, and his involvement in the Bundy case, as well as his imagined conversations with Ilse Koch and Christine Jorgensen, were all products of his mind.

The TV series *Monster: The Ed Gein Story* invented the scene where FBI agents John Douglas and Robert Ressler consulted with Ed Gein to try and understand Ted Bundy’s mind. While Douglas and Ressler were real FBI agents, this specific interaction never happened. It was created for the show’s storyline.
Surprisingly, Ted Bundy’s first arrest wasn’t for any of his crimes, but for ignoring a police roadblock. Officers found suspicious items in his car then, though he initially evaded consequences. He was finally apprehended in 1978 during another routine traffic stop. Bundy was convicted and ultimately executed by electric chair in 1989.
