Just this week, Apple TV+ unexpectedly delayed the release of its highly anticipated new series, a thriller starring Jessica Chastain and based on the true story of someone who hunts white supremacists. Days before its planned premiere – originally scheduled for tomorrow – Apple quietly removed most of the show’s advertising from social media. They only issued a brief explanation after a tech blog reported on the changes. Jessica Chastain, who stars in and produces the show, then released a statement expressing her disagreement with the decision and emphasizing the show’s continued importance, even with a planned 2025 release.
The decision to delay the show’s release is raising eyebrows. It’s common for entertainment to be postponed after tragic events, particularly mass shootings. But given the current political tension, was the show’s violent content – it centers around tracking down extremists online – simply too sensitive? It’s possible Apple worried that, following the strong reactions to the death of Charlie Kirk, now wasn’t the right time for such a show. Some speculate Apple might be preemptively avoiding conflict with an administration known for its threats towards media and unpredictable trade policies. Alternatively, the delay could be a strategic move to generate buzz – the so-called “Streisand effect” – as online searches about the show have increased. It’s also possible the show wasn’t considered a high priority, or that a combination of these, and other, factors were at play. Ultimately, we don’t know. Apple has remained tight-lipped, only responding to press inquiries, and the show’s producers haven’t offered any further explanation beyond their initial public statement.
It’s tempting to see these choices, including the pause on *The Savant* (assuming that’s all it is), as driven by simple greed and, surprisingly, fear. It seems like those in charge are afraid of upsetting powerful people. This is unfortunate, because what audiences really want during uncertain times is to feel reassured. Jimmy Kimmel’s return to television proved this, drawing record ratings. *Andor* resonated with viewers and critics partly because its characters repeatedly and convincingly argued against oppressive rule. *The Savant* could potentially have a similar impact, offering Apple a chance to express a meaningful message, but currently, the company is choosing to remain silent.
