Dichen Lachman Teases “A Whole World We Don’t Know” About Gemma in Severance

The second season of Severance ended in March 2025, and fans are still debating the biggest mysteries. Now that Mark S. (Adam Scott) and Helly R. (Britt Lower) have rebelled against Lumon Industries, how long can their alliance last? What is Lumon’s ultimate plan for the severance procedure? And with Gemma (Dichen Lachman) now free from Lumon’s influence, what will she do next?

MovieWeb questioned Lachman about future plans, and though she remained tight-lipped, she suggested exciting things are coming. “There’s a whole world of story yet to be told,” Lachman shared. “I can’t wait to see where they go with it.”

With each season, we’ve learned more about Gemma. Initially, we met her as Ms. Casey, a wellness counselor working within Lumon, like the other “Innies” – people who had their memories and personalities split. Neither we nor she knew anything about her life outside of Lumon. It was later revealed that she was actually Gemma Scout, Mark’s wife, who he thought had passed away. Her supposed death was a major reason Mark chose to undergo the severance procedure and work at Lumon.

Lachman quickly realized her character, Ms. Casey, was more complex than she initially thought. She shared with MovieWeb that a Zoom call with executive producer Ben Stiller, before she even received the role or read the script, sparked her excitement. At first, she assumed Ms. Casey was simply a background office worker and worried the part might not be very engaging. However, learning about the character’s importance to the story and her connection to Mark changed everything. “I immediately became incredibly excited to take on the role,” she explained.

Season two revealed that Lumon had secretly kept Gemma alive, holding her in a hidden part of their building to test the boundaries of the severance procedure. Though she’s ultimately rescued and recovers, her husband Mark – specifically, the part of him created by severance – chooses to remain inside Lumon with another severed employee, Helly R.

What’s next for Gemma? Will she work to expose Lumon from the outside, or attempt to get inside the company like Mark? We’re also left wondering about her life before all of this began. Severance is wonderfully unpredictable, and that’s a big reason we consider it one of the ten best shows of 2025.

It will be a while before fans get to see more of Severance. Filming for season 3 is scheduled to begin this spring, meaning new episodes likely won’t air until 2027. While the wait is frustrating for viewers, director Ben Stiller (Lachman) assures them that good things take time, especially when striving for perfection. He believes the team is carefully refining the show to make it the best it can be.

You can catch more of Rachel Lachman in her new movie, Vampires of the Velvet Lounge, where she plays a vampire hunter. It hits theaters this Friday, March 20th.
