Dexter: Original Sin Episode 6 includes a cheeky reference to original show’s hated ending

In Dexter: New Blood, they’ve given a ’90s twist to Dexter’s backstory, but this new episode can’t help but subtly echo the most tragic event from the original series.

In Original Sin Episode 6, Dexter finds himself engrossed in pursuing his most recent victim, yet momentarily halted when persuaded to join a double date with his sibling, Debra.

In the case of Dexter, who can be quite uncomfortable on dates, things get off to a rocky start. Yet, he eventually regains his composure by taking note of his upcoming target and with some guidance from Deb. However, viewers familiar with the controversial finale of the original series might have noticed an implicit jab in a scene between Dexter and Deb.

And in case you had completely erased from your memory a specific lumberjack, Original Sin compelled you to recall him again (Be aware: potential spoilers ahead!).

Original Sin references lumberjack Dexter

In Episode 6 of “Original Sin,” Deb arranges a double date for Dexter with her new boyfriend Gio and her friend Sofia, who has feelings for Dexter. Early in the day before he heads off to work, she searches through his closet, looking for an outfit she considers trendy enough to impress Gio.

As I stumble upon a checkered shirt, my friend nudges me, whispering, “You know Sofia’s fond of guys rocking plaid. She’s got this quirky thing for lumberjacks, it seems.

Without a doubt, this allusion seems to be related to the character “Dexter Morgan”, whose popularity skyrocketed following the series finale in 2013. In that climactic episode, Dexter chose an unusual path by leaping from a boat into a storm rather than reuniting with Hannah and Harrison, who were waiting for him elsewhere.

Contrarily, the epilogue reveals that Dexter survived, now living out his days secluded as a lumberjack – sporting a thick beard. This conclusion drew criticism from fans, who generally favored him meeting an end, instead.

Later on, Showtime’s entertainment president, Gary Levine, admitted, “Dexter was one of Showtime’s finest treasures, but unfortunately, we didn’t give it the attention it deserved in the finale. That fact has always bothered me.

In 2021, when the sequel series “New Blood” continued, the character once known as the Bay Harbor Butcher had switched careers from being a lumberjack to working as a clerk at a hunting supplies store located in Iron Lake, New York.

Looking back, critics have found some merit in the ending of Dexter, but it’s still a divisive episode. The joke made by Debra in “Original Sin” suggests that the series itself isn’t shy about taking light-hearted jabs at its past events.
