As a seasoned crime enthusiast and forensics aficionado, I find myself utterly captivated by the intricate narrative of Dexter Morgan’s life. The series presents us with a unique perspective on morality, law enforcement, and family dynamics, all woven into a tale of one man’s struggle to reconcile his dark desires with his need for human connection.
The initial episode of the recently launched Dexter series, titled “Original Sin Episode 1 – ‘And in the Beginning…’,” offers viewers a glimpse into the origin story of Dexter Morgan, a notorious fictional character known for his role as a serial killer.
Amidst the rollout of Dexter spinoffs, specifically between New Blood and Resurrection, Dexter: Original Sin delves into Dexter’s past. Set in 1991, it portrays a quiet, solitary surgeon-in-training with an insatiable craving for blood.
In the initial installment of the precursor series, we delve into how his fate was forever intertwined with violence, and the singular instance that ultimately led him to commit his inaugural lethal act.
If you’re curious about the events unfolding in Dexter: Original Sin Episode 1, here’s a handy recap for you: All the key details are laid out below, but beware – significant plot twists lie ahead! (Proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers!)
A killer’s life flashes before his eyes in Dexter: Original Sin Episode 1
Immediately following the climactic end of New Blood’s final episode, Dexter (Michael C. Hall) lies wounded, near death in the snow. He’s rescued and transported to a hospital where medical professionals desperately work to restart his heart. Miraculously, they do, and Dexter is thrust back into memories of his past, starting with the very instant of his birth.
Moving ahead in time, we find a youthful Dexter (Patrick Gibson) learning to become a surgeon. While honing his skills on a cadaver under the watchful eyes of his instructor and fellow students, he is relentlessly ridiculed. Yet, his teacher commends him, although Dexter himself remains unaffected, expressing displeasure when he observes that there’s no blood present.
While Harry Morgan, played by Christian Slater, is investigating a grisly crime scene with Captain Aaron Spencer (Patrick Dempsey) and Forensics Head Tanya Martin (Sarah Michelle Gellar), the victims are two sets of parents and a child. At that moment, they’re drawing a blank on any leads.
Harry investigates a serial killer
Over the dinner, Dexter finds himself seated alongside his father and sister, Debra (known as Molly Brown). In an effort to encourage socialization from Dexter, their father proposes a bargain with Debra: she’s allowed to attend a weekend gathering, but only if she brings her brother. Taken aback, she abruptly exits the scene in dismay.
When by himself, Dexter confides to his father about his unfulfilled cravings, fearing that becoming a surgeon won’t suppress his desire to kill. However, Harry reassures him they will find a path forward. (It’s evident that Harry has been aiding him in managing these sinister desires, with surgery as their proposed solution.)
The following day, Dexter shows up at the University of Miami campus. He strolls through a career fair, finding himself underwhelmed until he encounters a forensics exhibit, adorned with real crime scene photos. Fascinated by the images, he endeavors to engage Vince Masuka, who is associated with his father’s work, but is instead brushed aside so that Vince can approach the attractive female students.
At Miami Metro, Captain Spencer vocally expresses concern to his team about an escalating murder spree that’s claimed eight lives so far. They appear to be dealing with a serial killer. Fortunately, Tanya enters the picture and offers them a potential suspect whose footprints match those found at one of the crime scenes: Levi Reed. Swiftly, they rush to his residence, where a tactical team quietly storms in and apprehends him during his shower time.
Trouble at the party for Dexter and Deb
At home, Dexter often peruses a stash of news articles he’s accumulated on Ted Bundy and other notorious murderers, whom he seems to idolize in a peculiar way. He spends most of his time immersed in killing fantasies, although he hasn’t taken a life himself. A party invitation disrupts this routine when Deb enters, mistakenly thinking he’d been glancing at an adult magazine.
Upon their arrival, Deb decides to leave her companion behind to go for drinks, causing Dexter to navigate on his own. A disturbance arises when Deb’s friend notifies him that an intoxicated Debra has been confined in a room with a fraternity member, prompting him to dash upstairs and forcefully enter the room.
In this scenario, Dexter discovers Debra unconscious beneath a boy, whom he swiftly seizes and hurls down the stairs. A scuffle ensues, with Dexter on the brink of picking up a knife when Deb herself intervenes, shoving him aside. They are both subsequently asked to leave, and Deb reprimands him for causing her embarrassment.
After coming back beyond their curfew, they encounter Harry who instructs them to retire for the night. Earlier events are recalled when Harry, years ago, discovers his boy Junior drowned in the pool. Seeing their child’s lifeless body being removed, Doris returns home hysterical with grief.
Harry’s health takes a turn
On the next day, Harry accompanies Dexter on one of their routine hunting excursions. According to Dexter’s narration, these hunts serve a purpose that quenches his desire for bloodlust. As they stroll through the wilderness, however, Dexter expresses his dissatisfaction with these outings to Harry.
He wants to graduate to killing, using the “code” his father taught him, but Harry dissuades him. Revealing the events from the night before, Dexter also tells him how much he wanted to kill the boy who assaulted Deb.
Subsequently, a devastating event unfolds: While Dexter was conversing, Harry suddenly felt a sharp pain in his arm and crumpled to the floor, signifying a heart attack. Dexter swiftly transported him to the hospital, but lost sight of him once the medical team whisked him away.
In the reception area, Dexter and Deb receive word that their father, Harry, is miraculously alive. The physician then informs them about Harry’s heart issue, emphasizing the necessity for him to lower his stress levels and maintain a healthy lifestyle moving forward. Trying to console Deb as Harry remains hospitalized, Dexter fails to prevent her from collapsing in despair when confronted with the prospect of potentially losing their father. In a fit of distress, she hurls the food from their refrigerator onto the floor.
Dexter discovers a killer
The week drifts by as Harry shows little improvement. During this time, Dexter finds himself reflecting on his sorrow within the hospital, growing increasingly fascinated with mortality. It is during this stay that he notices a nurse who seems to derive pleasure from patients’ demise, and even clips obituaries of those she has cared for, reminiscent of a character portrayed as an Angel of Death assassin.
This is bad news: The nurse treating your father is none other than Nurse Mary. Upon further examination, he uncovers her deception – she’s been administering potassium nitrate to him, a compound that can slowly and stealthily end his life within a few days of administration without raising suspicion. Consequently, he and Harry determine it’s necessary to put an end to her actions.
In this scenario, Dexter discreetly proceeds to his task. He quietly enters her apartment, seals off the area with plastic wrap. As Mary returns home, Dexter stumbles but manages to assault her, causing him to miss Deb’s volleyball match. He mocks her for her misdeeds before ultimately stabbing her with a knife.
Afterward, he heads towards the marshy area, submerging her corpse in the water, a place where alligators usually dispose of their leftovers. Interestingly, he retains her earrings, an action he later acknowledges as a “regrettable blunder.
A new life for Dexter Morgan
The following day, Dexter arrives at his driveway in a fluster, only to discover multiple police vehicles parked there. However, it wasn’t for his arrest; instead, they were delivering mountains of food to help feed the children as Harry was admitted to the hospital.
That’s where he encounters Tanya, who shares with him that she’s learned about his fascination with crime scene images, and following a conversation with his surgical instructor, extends to him the opportunity for an internship on the forensic squad.
Deb pardons Dexter for not showing up at her volleyball match, and the duo stand together during his graduation. Luckily, Harry recovers quickly, allowing both children to bring him back home.
Harry closely monitors Dexter to ensure he hasn’t left any traces of his crime, feeling uneasy about it. When Dexter admits that the gruesome incident seemed “proper” or justified to him, Harry sheds tears upon Dexter’s departure from the room.
On the following day, sporting a spruced-up hairstyle and a revitalized demeanor, Dexter commences his initial day at the internship under Harry’s guidance.
