Dexter: Original Sin creator slices meme dreams & confirms Doakes was going to return

James Doakes, a hugely popular character from the original *Dexter* series and a frequent source of internet memes, was planned to reappear in the now-canceled *Dexter: Original Sin* prequel.

If you use social media, you’ve probably come across a meme featuring Doakes in the last year.

Erik King played a key character in the first two seasons of Dexter, acting as a foil to the main character. He consistently felt that something wasn’t quite right with Dexter.

Doakes was correct, as Dexter Morgan was indeed a serial killer, but one who only killed other criminals who had escaped punishment – a fact Doakes couldn’t substantiate with evidence.

Stephen King’s performances and mannerisms have become incredibly popular online, inspiring many memes. The most famous is the “but you can’t prove it” meme, where people express doubt or suspicion using images or GIFs of the character Doakes giving a skeptical side-eye to Dexter.

Unfortunately for fans of the show *Dexter* and those who enjoyed the memes, the creator of the *Dexter: Original Sin* prequel, Clyde Phillips, has shared that the canceled series was planned to feature a return of the iconic character.

Doakes was ready to return in Dexter: Original Sin

On the Discussing Dexter podcast, Phillips shared his disappointment with the cancellation of Original Sin, noting it happened even after the show had been renewed for another season.

I received a difficult phone call one night after the show had initially been approved, and I’d already told the writers and actors. Then, unexpectedly, the approval was taken back. It was a poorly managed situation, and I was very unhappy with how it was handled.

Phillips explained the intention is to build out the ‘Dexter’ world with multiple shows, much like Taylor Sheridan has done with ‘Yellowstone’ and its various spinoffs.

We planned out the story for a couple of years and were excited about adding characters like Doakes, imagining what he’d be like as a young man in his twenties or thirties. We also envisioned exploring the development of Captain Matthews, and seeing how both Dexter and Harry would change over time.

Okay, so it looks like Captain Angel Batista, easily one of the most popular characters, probably won’t be back for a while. Unless… they pull a sneaky move like they did with Erik King in the *Dexter: New Blood* premiere. Remember how he showed up as a ghost? Maybe Batista could appear in a dream or something similar. Honestly, I’d love to see that!

The first season of ‘Resurrection’ was very popular and left the door open for a follow-up, but it seems that series will be the only new content featuring Dexter for now.

So, I was reading an interview with Phillips, and he basically said don’t hold your breath for that Trinity killer spin-off we’ve all been hoping for. He says it’s been put on hold for the time being – it’s definitely not a priority right now.

The showrunner questioned what would happen with the ‘Trinity’ series if ‘Original Sin’ – which was expected to be successful – was cancelled. While they’d be happy to move forward with ‘Trinity’ if given the chance, they don’t think it’s likely.
