Dev Plans To Voluntarily Delete AI-Generated Game

Last summer, a solo game developer named Eero Laine released a free card game called Hardest. He was upfront about using AI to create some of the game’s content. However, Laine has since changed his views on AI and removed Hardest from Steam on January 30th.

Laine explained on the game’s Steam page that his partner helped him realize his mistake, and he shared why he initially used AI-generated content.

Laine explained they created the game over a couple of months during the summer, deciding to experiment with AI. They noted that university provides students with free access to these tools, but have since realized AI isn’t truly free – it has significant economic and environmental impacts.

Laine explained that because they built the game entirely on their own, they have the ability to create a more polished version with proper assets later on if they choose. However, they believe the game is currently so poor in quality that it’s disrespectful to both game developers and players, and they feel the most ethical course of action is to remove it from Steam.

There’s a lot of discussion about using AI to create content for video games. Recently, publisher Hooded Horse, known for games like Endless Legend 2, Terra Invicta, and Against the Storm, decided to prohibit all AI-generated artwork and assets in its games. The company’s CEO, Tim Bender, went so far as to call such content damaging to the industry.

Shortly after winning Indie Game of the Year, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 had its award taken back. This was because the game included some temporary AI elements that were later removed.

I was really excited about Arc Raiders, but I was bummed to hear about the controversy surrounding their use of AI-generated voices. Apparently, some people are worried it could take jobs away from voice actors. But Patrick Söderlund, the head of the studio, recently explained that wasn’t their intention at all. He said they see AI as a tool to help developers and ultimately make the game better for us players. He understands it’s a complicated issue, and it’s sparked a lot of debate, but he wants people to see the potential benefits.
