Denzel Washington’s Netflix Historical Epic Gets Major Production Update

Antoine Fuqua’s planned Netflix film about Hannibal, the Carthaginian general, is moving closer to becoming a reality. A timeframe for when filming will begin has been confirmed for the historical movie.

I’m hearing some exciting news about the next Hannibal film! Sources say they’re planning to start shooting this summer, and Italy will be the stunning backdrop. Apparently, they’ll be setting up shop at Cinecittà Studios in Rome, and the team is already on the ground doing prep work and scouting locations. It sounds like things are really moving forward!

The historical epic, first revealed in 2023, was written by John Logan, a highly accomplished screenwriter. He’s been nominated for three Academy Awards for his work on films like Ridley Scott’s Gladiator (2000), Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator (2004), and Hugo (2011). Logan has also penned screenplays for popular franchises, including two James Bond films (Skyfall in 2012 and Spectre in 2015), a Star Trek movie (Nemesis in 2002), and an Alien installment (Covenant in 2017).

Who Was Hannibal?

The movie tells the story of Hannibal, a famous and brilliant military leader. It focuses on the key battles he fought against the Roman Republic during the Second Punic War.

The presence of production in Italy is likely linked to Hannibal’s occupation of southern Italy for 15 years. This followed a Carthaginian invasion that initially threatened Roman control. Ultimately, the Romans defeated Hannibal at the Battle of Zama after invading North Africa themselves.

Robert Richardson will be the cinematographer for the new Hannibal movie. He’s worked with director Antoine Fuqua before, most recently on the 2022 film Emancipation with Will Smith, and the third Equalizer movie. He’s also known for his work on films like Kill Bill, Django Unchained, and Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

Denzel Washington is producing the film with a team including Erik Olsen, Adam Goldworm, Todd Black, Clayton Townsend, and Antoine Fuqua through Fuqua’s production company, Hill District Media, which has a deal with Netflix. Scott Greenberg, Kat Samick, Katia Washington, Frank Moll, and Jeremy Lott are serving as executive producers on the project.

Hannibal Is Denzel Washington & Antoine Fuqua’s Sixth Movie

The upcoming Hannibal film will be the sixth time director Antoine Fuqua has worked with Denzel Washington. Their partnership began with the 2001 film Training Day, where Washington earned acclaim for playing LAPD Detective Alonzo Harris. Most recently, they collaborated on 2023’s The Equalizer 3, with Washington returning as former Marine Robert McCall.

Although it hasn’t been confirmed, Denzel Washington is reportedly set to star in two more Equalizer films. If the director, Antoine Fuqua, also signs on, this would mark their eighth project together – a significant collaboration.

Before his upcoming film about Hannibal, director Antoine Fuqua has another biopic coming out soon. Titled Michael, it will be released in theaters on April 24th. The movie, written by John Logan, charts the life of Michael Jackson, from his days with the Jackson 5 through the beginning of his solo career. Michael Jackson’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, will play his uncle in his first major film role.

A release date for the Hannibal movie has not yet been shared by Netflix.
