Some might have been taken aback that Denzel Washington didn’t make it into the category for Best Supporting Actor at the 2025 Academy Awards, but he’s not letting it keep him up at night. During a tumultuous Oscar season, Washington shared his thoughts on being overlooked by the Academy for his role in Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator II” with The New York Times.
Washington playfully questioned, ‘Seriously?’ He sighed, looking a bit disheartened. But he quickly added, ‘Regardless, I’m proud of what they achieved, and I’m content with my current path.’
He went on to say, ‘I’ve been here for quite some time now, and there are certain things I need to attend to, not comparing myself to others, but acknowledging the stage of life I’m at.’ He continued, ‘The essence of knowledge is recognition. As I grow older, I strive to speak less and listen more – and that journey towards understanding is truly captivating.'”
Or, if you prefer a more casual tone:
“He put it this way, ‘I’ve been around for a while now, and there are things I gotta deal with, not saying I got bigger problems than others, but life at this age has its own reality.’ He went on to say, ‘The key to wisdom is understanding, and as I get wiser, I try to talk less and listen more – and that’s an exciting journey.’
Washington expressed that playing “Othello” on Broadway offers a satisfying experience regardless if it leads to an Oscar nomination or not.
While I was there with a smile, I thought to myself, ‘You missed out on an Oscar nomination today, yet here you are performing in ‘Othello’ on Broadway.’
Although the Academy didn’t honor Washington for his performance, he still received nominations for Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, NAACP Image Awards, and Satellite Awards for his role as Macrinus in “Gladiator II”. In fact, he has already won Oscars before – he took home the Best Supporting Actor award for “Glory” in 1990 and the Best Leading Actor award for “Training Day” in 2002.
2025’s Oscar nominations didn’t acknowledge just Washington, but also several other members of the “Gladiator II” cast and team. The movie received only one nomination, for the exceptional costume design work done by Janty Yates and David Crossman.
