Denmark set to ban social media access for children under 15

Similar to a new policy in Australia, Denmark will soon prevent children under 15 from accessing social media platforms.

Australia is set to be the first country to introduce a law on December 10th that prevents children under 16 from accessing social media. This pioneering step is already influencing other nations, with Denmark quickly moving to implement similar rules.

I was really surprised to hear that Denmark is following Australia’s lead on social media! They’ve agreed to set a minimum age of 15 to use some platforms. They haven’t said exactly which ones yet, but Australia’s rules cover pretty much everything – Snapchat, Threads, YouTube, even newer stuff like Kick and potentially Roblox. It’s a big move, and I’m curious to see how it all plays out.

Denmark’s digital ministry explained that this measure is intended to keep children and young people safe online.

Denmark set to impose social media ban for those under 15

Denmark is introducing age limits for social media platforms, a move initiated by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen who has been advocating for restrictions on how people use these platforms.

Even though most Danish political parties have agreed on a deal, it’s still unclear when the ban on social media will actually begin.

Okay, so the Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, first talked about limiting access to social media way back in September 2025. Now, after about 15 months, that plan is actually going to be a reality next month. It’s been a long time coming, honestly!

It’s not yet clear how Denmark will put this policy into practice. However, the statement indicates that parents can give permission for their children to access it, allowing even 13-year-olds to participate with clear parental consent.

Denmark plans to approach online safety like Australia does, but other countries are trying different things, such as blocking certain devices in some U.S. schools, all to keep young people safe.
