A highly acclaimed science fiction thriller from 2016 is now available to stream for free and quickly gaining popularity. Based on a prize-winning short story by Ted Chiang, originally published in 1998, the film—directed by Denis Villeneuve—updates the story to the present day. While known for directing futuristic epics like Dune, Villeneuve delivers a uniquely compelling and thought-provoking sci-fi experience with Arrival.
The sci-fi thriller Arrival, directed by Villeneuve, is now available on Pluto TV. Added on April 1st, it’s quickly become popular, currently ranking as the second most-watched movie on the platform this week. World War Z is still number one, followed by the comedy Pineapple Express. The classic film Titanic continues to be a favorite, having been in the Top 10 for an impressive 246 days. Arrival will likely stay on Pluto TV through April, though Pluto hasn’t announced a specific end date for its availability.
Eric Heisserer turned Ted Chiang’s story, “Story of Your Life,” into the movie Arrival, directed by Villeneuve. The film explores how people around the world would respond to the arrival of aliens. Instead of focusing on military conflict like Independence Day, Mars Attacks, or The War of the Worlds (and unlike most alien movies, except perhaps E.T.), Arrival emphasizes communication and understanding. Amy Adams plays Louise Banks, a linguistics professor who attempts to decipher the aliens’ unique language. As she learns to understand them, Louise discovers a profound new perspective. The film also features Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, Tzi Ma, and Michael Stuhlbarg.
‘Arrival’ Is One of the Best Sci-Fi Movies of the 21st Century
While Ted Chiang originally created the story, Denis Villeneuve and cinematographer Bradford Young masterfully translated it to the screen, giving it both epic scope and a deeply personal feel. Viewers and critics immediately recognized this impact when the film was released. Arrival is critically acclaimed, boasting a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on over 400 reviews, and an audience score of 83% from more than 50,000 ratings. The film also received significant awards recognition, winning the 2017 Oscar for Best Sound Editing and earning seven other nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director for Villeneuve.
Denis Villeneuve Returns to Sci-Fi for ‘Dune: Part Three’

Seriously, is there any genre Denis Villeneuve can’t master? I mean, he gave us the nail-biting tension of Sicario, the deeply unsettling Prisoners, the beautiful and moving Arrival, and then blew us all away with the epic scale of Dune. And now he’s going back to that world! I’m so excited for Dune: Part Three, with Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Josh Brolin, Rebecca Ferguson, Jason Momoa, and the whole cast returning. It’s hitting theaters December 18, 2026, and get this – after Dune, he’s taking on James Bond! I can’t even imagine what his take on Bond will be like, but I’m already in!
