After several delays, the tactics RPG Demonschool from Ysbryd Games and Necrosoft Games is finally releasing tomorrow on consoles and PC. I’ve had the chance to play the game on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch, and wanted to share my impressions. Many players are curious about how the console versions perform, especially the Switch port and whether it will be compatible with the upcoming Switch 2, as well as how the game runs on the Steam Deck. I’ll be covering performance across all platforms, including load times, and offering suggestions for improvements the developers could make in future updates.

Demonschool PC features and graphics options
Okay, so I’ve been playing Demonschool on Steam, and it runs super smooth because the frame rate isn’t limited. You can use pretty much any controller you want – Switch Pro, PlayStation, Xbox, or just stick with keyboard and mouse. The game is smart enough to figure out what kind of controller you’re using and show the right button prompts, but you can also manually set them if you prefer. Visually, it looks great – you can play in anything from 960×540 up to 4K, and it supports both 16:9 and 16:10 aspect ratios, so it fits most screens perfectly.
The game currently works on 21:9 ultrawide monitors, but the ultrawide support still needs some work. You might see missing images or flickering on the sides of the screen. For the best experience, we recommend playing in 16:9 mode, even if you have an ultrawide monitor. While we didn’t necessarily promise ultrawide support, please stick to 16:9 for now.
Demonschool PC options

Okay, so aside from a few quirks with ultrawide monitors, Demonschool is fantastic on PC! I’ve been playing it and it runs smoothly – not just on my PC, but also on the Steam Deck, the new Steam Deck OLED, and even the ROG Ally. I’ll go into more detail about how it performs on those handhelds later.

Demonschool Switch 2 and Switch impressions
Demonschool is a game originally made for the Nintendo Switch, and it works on the new Switch 2 through backward compatibility. While it looks great on the Switch OLED’s screen in handheld mode, load times can be slow. When played docked, the visual experience will be pretty similar on both the original Switch and the Switch 2. The good news is that load times are noticeably faster on the Switch 2 when playing the older version of the game. Hopefully, the developers will create a version of Demonschool specifically designed for the Switch 2, as the game’s unique style would really stand out when running at the console’s full resolution.

Demonschool Steam Deck and ROG Ally impressions
Demonschool is confirmed to work great with the Steam Deck! It already has full support for 16:10 screens in handheld mode. I just suggest one quick tweak for better combat: change the right trackpad setting from ‘joystick’ to ‘mouse cursor’. This makes moving around the battlefield much smoother, and you can even use the touchscreen for control. Honestly, playing Demonschool this way on the Steam Deck is now my favorite way to experience the game.

The ROG Ally Z1 Extreme runs this game flawlessly, hitting 120fps with quick loading times. If you have both the Steam Deck OLED and the ROG Ally, we recommend playing on the OLED Deck – the game looks fantastic on its screen. If you only have the ROG Ally, you’ll still have a smooth and trouble-free experience.
Demonschool PS5 impressions
Demonschool on PS5 is a really great experience. It takes full advantage of the console with smooth 120Hz visuals, helpful progress tracking through PS5 Activity Cards, and the quickest loading times I’ve seen on any platform. I also tried it on the PS Portal, but if you’re playing on a TV, the PS5 version is definitely the best choice. I’m so impressed with this version that I’ll absolutely buy a physical copy when it’s available.

Demonschool PS5, Switch 2, Switch, and PC load times compared
To check how quickly Demonschool loads, I timed how long it took to reach the title screen from the main menu, load an early game save, and start a battle. I tested on several devices with different storage: the PS5 version was on the PS5’s internal SSD, the Steam Deck and ROG Ally versions were on their internal SSDs, the Switch version was on the Switch 2’s internal storage, and the Switch OLED version was on a microSD card. All load times are measured in seconds and are shown below.
| Platform | Dashboard to title | Loading a save | Battle |
| Switch 1 | 22-23 | 20 | 7-8 |
| Switch 1 on Switch 2 | 14 | 9-10 | 3 |
| PlayStation 5 | 10 | 4 | 1 |
| Steam Deck | 14 | 9 | 1 |
| ROG Ally | 12 | 5-6 | 1 |
The original Switch takes the longest to load games, even though it looks good on OLED. The newer Switch is faster thanks to its improved storage, but still has some loading times. The PlayStation 5 is the quickest, offering a smooth experience both on console and PC. Hopefully, a version specifically designed for the newer Switch will further improve loading speeds and graphics on that system.

Which version of Demonschool should you buy?
For the best handheld experience with Demonschool, I recommend the Steam Deck OLED first, followed by the ROG Ally. While the Switch 2 offers backward compatibility, its visual scaling in handheld mode isn’t ideal. Nintendo could improve things by adding better upscaling options or letting players choose how 720p games are displayed, potentially with pixel-perfect scaling.
I love playing Demonschool on the PS5, whether it’s on my TV or handheld. It loads incredibly quickly, looks amazing with support for smooth 120hz visuals, and the PS5’s Activity Cards help me easily keep track of my progress.

What I want fixed in Demonschool patches
I’m hoping to see updates for Demonschool that enhance support for ultrawide monitors and allow players to turn off the character shake and its sound effects. I’m really enjoying the game’s art style, combat, and music, but the character shake feels jarring and doesn’t quite fit the overall experience.
Both The Silver Case and Demonschool have a few quirks. In The Silver Case, I personally don’t enjoy the sound of the typewriter. In Demonschool, I highly recommend disabling the screen and portrait shake effects – they made me feel motion sick. You might not have the same issue, but they seemed to happen too frequently. I’ll update this review if any of these things are fixed in a future update.
I look forward to playing more Demonschool later this week because I’m enjoying it a lot so far.
