Demi Moore ‘Shocked’ by Golden Globe Win, Calls Out Producer Who Once Called Her a ‘Popcorn’ Actress: ‘That Corroded Me Over Time’

Demi Moore claimed her initial acting accolade throughout her professional journey – indeed, her career – when she was honored with the Golden Globe for the best actress in a film, be it a drama or comedy. Her triumph came from her daring portrayal of an aging star grappling with body horror in the satirical movie “The Substance”.

Currently in a state of astonishment, Moore, aged 62, shared his feelings on stage. With a career spanning more than four decades behind him, this is the first time he’s ever been awarded as an actor. He expressed deep humility and gratitude for the recognition.

Moore has been nominated for four Globe Awards spanning close to 25 years, with previous nominations in 1991 for “Ghost” and two in 1997 for the anthology series “If These Walls Could Talk”. This time around, she clinched the win for “The Substance”, besting Amy Adams (“Nightbitch”), Cynthia Erivo (“Wicked”), Karla Sofía Gascón (“Emilia Perez”), Mikey Madison (“Anora”) and Zendaya (“Challengers”). Although Moore had previously won an ensemble award at the Independent Spirit Award for “Margin Call” in 2012, the solo acting honor for “The Substance” marks her first major individual accolade from a prominent awards organization.

During a heartfelt address, Moore reminisced about her career and shared an unfortunate comment made by a powerful figure who implied that commercial success and award recognition don’t go hand in hand. Moore first gained popularity in the 1980s with movies such as “Blame It on Rio,” “St. Elmo’s Fire,” and “About Last Night.” She later starred in blockbuster hits like “Ghost,” “A Few Good Men,” “Indecent Proposal,” and “Disclosure.

Thirty years back, a producer labeled me as a ‘popcorn actress,’ and in that moment, I interpreted it as something I wasn’t entitled to have,” she shared, gesturing towards the gleaming trophy in her hand. “I understood it meant I could star in films that were profitable and earned significant sums, but I wouldn’t receive recognition. I accepted this belief, and over time, it eroded me, leading me to question if perhaps my career had reached its peak a few years ago, or if maybe I had accomplished all that I was destined to do.

Moore shares that she found herself at a particularly difficult time when an extraordinary, daring, brave, unconventional, even slightly eccentric script landed on her desk. This was none other than the screenplay for “The Substance” directed by Coralie Fargeat. In this movie, her character Elisabeth Sparkle, a struggling Hollywood actress facing 50, resorts to an illegal drug that physically divides her into two – one being the younger, more perfect version of herself, portrayed by Margaret Qualley. Predictably, the illicit medicine brings about some unforeseen complications. The film garnered five Golden Globe nominations in total and was successful at the box office, earning $77.8 million against a production budget of only $17.5 million.

Moore stated, ‘The universe has indicated that I still have unfinished business.’ He then expressed gratitude towards those who supported him and had faith in him even when he lacked confidence in himself.

She lifted her statue and declared, “There are times when we doubt our intelligence, beauty, body shape, success, or simply feel inadequate in some way… A woman once told me, ‘You will never be enough, but you can understand the worth of yourself if you just stop using the measuring stick.’ Today, I am marking this moment as a testament to my completeness, the love that motivates me, and the blessing of doing something I cherish while being reminded that I do belong.
