Deli spends thousands to stop people from pooping on patio overnight

A deli in Baton Rouge had to spend a lot of money to fix a problem outside its shop after dealing with the same issues happening repeatedly overnight for months.

The owners of Roul’s Deli on Plank Road reported a problem lasting about six months: people were congregating outside after closing and using the area near the entrance as a restroom before the business opened each day.

Hesham Saymeh, a co-owner, explained that staff faced this problem every day when they came to work. He said both employees and managers had to clean it up daily.

Saymeh explained that the restaurant’s patio attracted people in the evenings, unfortunately making a pre-existing issue outside the building worse.

To prevent people from entering when the restaurant is closed, the business installed about $7,000 worth of fencing around the patio.

Saymeh explained the decision was made after trying several approaches to resolve the situation. He personally asked the people gathering to relocate, and even offered them overnight accommodations if they would stop disrupting things, but the problem persisted.

Saymeh explained that she had to tell her employees that if they needed to spit, they should do so away from customers – either by the dumpster or somewhere else private.

The deli posted on social media to apologize for how the new fence looks, explaining they installed it after trying other solutions to fix the problem.

Saymeh reports the situation is currently stable, but the incident has also highlighted the larger issue of homelessness in the community.

Council member Darryl Hurst, who represents the area, stated that this situation shows there aren’t enough resources available to help people without homes.

Hurst stated that elected officials have a responsibility to address and fix the problems facing their communities.

Hurst also mentioned these problems aren’t unique to this location, and suggested that underlying health issues could be playing a role.

Baton Rouge General sends a mobile medical unit to the area each week to offer healthcare and help people find the services they need.

According to Hurst, the organization helps people experiencing homelessness by providing essential resources and tools they wouldn’t normally have access to. Beyond that, they focus on helping people gain job skills, find housing, and get medical attention.

Recently, several unusual stories involving feces have become popular online. One example is a YouTuber who surprisingly completed the challenging video game Dark Souls 2 using only an in-game item that is, well, poop.
