Death in Paradise Star Ardal O’Hanlon Returns For Return To Paradise Season 2 In Unique Way

A popular former inspector from Death in Paradise will make a guest appearance in the second season of the show’s Australian spin-off, Return to Paradise. After 14 successful seasons, Death in Paradise remains one of the BBC’s most enjoyable cozy murder mysteries, so Return to Paradise faced high expectations.

Fortunately, the new detective Mackenzie Clarke, created by Anna Samson, immediately made Return to Paradise a hit, capturing the same appeal as other shows in the “Paraverse” universe. It delivers puzzling mysteries, beautiful coastal scenery, and a great mix of funny moments and emotional storylines.

Naturally, Return to Paradise maintains a connection to its original series, Death in Paradise. Jack Mooney (played by Ardal O’Hanlon), the third detective inspector from Death in Paradise, was first introduced as a mentor to Mackenzie in London during season one of Return to Paradise. Ardal O’Hanlon will be back for season two, and Anna Samson recently explained to RadioTimes.com why Mooney’s ongoing role is crucial to the show.

The actress noted that while the character’s appearances are short, his story still progresses, particularly in how he feels about Mackenzie. She observed these quick returns to London allow for development of his emotional journey.

Samson compared Mooney’s character to a kind of “fairy godfather” for Mackenzie, who generally prefers to be alone and keep to himself, only really connecting with a small circle of people.

O’Hanlon’s character has a subtly magical quality. He quietly looks out for Mackenzie, almost like a distant fairy godfather, and gently guides her towards finding her own happiness without her realizing it.

Samson explained that while it wasn’t explicitly stated in the script, the character had a certain captivating quality and a clear, deep affection for Mackenzie, which was evident even in brief moments.

DI Mooney, played by Ardal O’Hanlon, was known as a particularly kind and understanding lead detective on Death in Paradise. When he first appeared, his character was still mourning the loss of his wife. Bringing him back as a mentor and source of support for Mackenzie, even through phone calls, has been a popular move with viewers.

Season two of Return to Paradise will also feature returning cast members including Tai Hara as Glenn Strong, the medical examiner and Mackenzie’s ex-fiancée, Lloyd Griffith as DSC Colin Cartwright, and Catherine McClements as Senior Sergeant Philomena Strong. Celia Ireland will be back as Reggie Rocco, alongside Aaron L. McGrath as Constable Felix Wilkinson, and Andrea Demetriades as Daisy Dixon.
