While inspired by real events, the series Death By Lightning features a key scene invented for the show. Creator Mike Makowsky also shared that James A. Garfield’s wife was actually the most heroic figure in the story.
Near the end of the film Death by Lightning, there’s a scene where Lucretia Garfield visits Charles J. Guiteau before his execution and tells him his actions won’t be remembered – that history will ultimately overlook him. According to an interview with Tudum, this meeting never actually occurred.
The show’s creator also described Lucretia as a heroic figure in Death By Lightning. Makowsky believes that if her husband hadn’t been killed, she would have been a truly inspiring role model and significantly changed how people viewed the First Lady.
