Dear Paul Mescal, Please Just Admit You Want to Be in a Broadway Musical

As a follower who has been closely observing Paul Mescal‘s career, I can’t help but feel a sense of deep admiration for his unwavering passion and dedication to musical theater, despite his recent success in the film industry. It’s as if he’s been bitten by the show tune bug and there’s no cure!

It appears that despite promoting a major action film set in the Roman Empire, Paul Mescal continues to express his genuine feelings, stating he identifies more with Mandy Patinkin rather than Tom Cruise. To put it another way, as per the movie Clueless, he’s more of a jazz-dancing, Stephen Sondheim-loving, Palace Theatre-ticket-holding buddy of Audra, if you catch my drift. In an interview with Ariana Grande on December 10, he openly declared his love for musicals. Furthermore, he confessed that given the choice between stage and film acting, he would opt for the thrill of being onstage, as it offers a unique sense of ownership once the curtain rises. With this obvious passion for musical theater, it’s high time we cast him in Jesus Christ Superstar! Here are some instances where his longing to be a musical theater star instead of a brooding heartthrob has surfaced:

February 1, 2012: Mescal made his debut in a musical performance, starring in Maynooth Post Primary School’s presentation of “Phantom of the Opera“. He played the lead role, and recalled to Grande: “I was 16 years old. I was in a program similar to junior year, which is two years before graduating from high school. And I remember being rolled out on a fake organ and not knowing how to play it at all.” Despite his initial confusion, a strong affection for the art form was ignited. The entire performance can be found on YouTube.

From September 26th to 30th, 2012, Mescal played Javert in the production of Les Misérables by the Meath Youth Musical Society. According to an article from the Meath Chronicle published at that time, he won the role against over a hundred other candidates. The video evidence available shows that his sideburns were quite prominent on his face, taking up most of it.

On January 9, 2023, Mescal steps away from musical theater after performing in plays in Dublin and London, followed by his role in the hit series “Normal People” during the pandemic. It’s announced that he will step into Blake Jenner’s role for the long-awaited but yet-to-be-filmed adaptation of “Merrily We Roll Along,” directed by Richard Linklater. This project, which will be filmed over a span of twenty years, is a significant return to musical theater for someone who hasn’t been involved for nearly a decade. He’s eager to get back in the game.

By March 2023: Mescal assumes the role of Stanley Kowalski in Rebecca Frecknall’s stage production of A Streetcar Named Desire, demonstrating his commitment to maintaining a thriving theater career, while also nurturing his flourishing film career.

On April 21, 2023, one of his initial projects following “Normal People” is a film adaptation of the opera “Carmen,” largely devoid of songs. In this production, Melissa Barrera portrays a dancer, and it seems to be overshadowed by the studio. It’s unclear why Mescal chose this project, other than perhaps an attempt to get as close to the stage as possible without actually performing on it.

On November 11th, 2024: Confirmed! Mescal will perform in Frecknall’s “Streetcar” production, but not on Broadway – it’ll be staged in Brooklyn instead. Who knows, he might catch a few musical shows while there and get inspired. We think he’d find “Death Becomes Her” fascinating!

On December 8, 2024, Mescal graces the stage of Saturday Night Live, where he performs in a comedic take on Gladiator II: The Musical. This will be his public debut as a singer, and let me tell you, his voice is nothing short of magnificent – a shining tenor that leaves everyone amazed! Yes, it’s true; Mescal’s singing talent is truly captivating.

2024-12-10: On “Actors on Actors”, he unabashedly adores the musical “Wicked” and frequently discusses his passion for theater. He shares, “I believe my parents met while performing in ‘Pirates of Penzance’, so there’s something about being onstage that feels significant to me.” It seems it’s high time for him to acknowledge it: He yearns to take on roles in productions like “A New Brain”, “Rooms”, or “Assassins”. He longs to pour his heart out through song, and he wants to do so live! Let broody Paul break free and shine!
