Okay, so this is crazy! I was reading about this woman in Long Beach, California, and she was just walking her dog in the park when a small plane actually crashed into her! Thankfully, she’s recovering, but can you imagine?! It’s just wild to think about something like that happening during a normal walk.
Tiffany Harrison, a woman in her 40s, was walking across a soccer field on October 21st when a small, privately-built airplane experienced engine failure. The plane made an emergency landing and unfortunately hit her during the crash. Her sister, Brittany McFall, told ABC7 that Tiffany, who is deaf, didn’t hear the plane coming down behind her.
According to McFall, Harrison is deeply shaken by what happened. He explained that it’s unusual for someone to experience such a bizarre accident while simply enjoying a walk in the park. Harrison sustained a broken back and pelvis, and needed surgery to repair a serious leg injury. Fortunately, her dog was unharmed.
Woman survives freak plane crash in California
According to witnesses, the pilot – a man in his 60s – was trying to land in a field after reporting engine trouble. He told air traffic control, “I’ve lost power, declaring an emergency,” just before the plane crashed, CBS News reported.
When Long Beach Fire Department arrived at the scene, they found the plane flipped over on its fuselage with damaged landing gear. Both the passenger, Harrison, and the pilot were taken to local hospitals for treatment.
Dennis Lord, the hangar manager, explained to ABC7 that the plane was an experimental model that had been legally approved by the FAA. He noted that many similar planes are flown regularly in Southern California by hobbyists who build and operate them according to federal rules.
Investigators are trying to determine why the engine failed. The family of Harrison says she has a difficult recovery ahead, but they are grateful she survived the crash, which was almost unsurvivable.
