A Clayface movie is generating a lot of buzz as a potential DC Universe project, but most fans don’t believe he’ll be the main villain in Andy Muschietti’s upcoming Batman film, ‘The Brave and the Bold’.
The upcoming movie, set within the DC Universe, centers on Matt Hagen (played by Tom Rhys-Harries), a young actor who receives an experimental treatment after a brutal attack leaves him disfigured. The story draws inspiration from the origins of the Clayface character from Batman: The Animated Series, and is being developed by Mike Flanagan, the creator of The Haunting of Hill House.
Director Andy Muschietti subtly hinted at Clayface appearing in the “It” universe by referencing a specific comic book issue in the first episode of “Welcome to Derry.” James Gunn, known for his work in the DC universe, later shared the same comic to celebrate Clayface’s anniversary. Now, producer Roy Harries has also posted a picture of the comic, signaling that filming on the new movie is wrapping up next week.
Rumors initially suggested Clayface might be the central villain in Muschietti’s movie. However, opinions have shifted, and fans of the DC Universe have largely dismissed that possibility due to a particular concern.

Many fans of the DC Universe noticed the comic book was shared on social media to mark the first appearance of Hagen in the comics, as a way to build excitement before the Clayface movie, not necessarily to tease ‘Batman: The Brave and the Bold’.
The discussion started after a Reddit user pointed out the recent surge in Clayface references – from James Gunn mentioning the character on the anniversary of his debut, to an Easter egg in the ‘Welcome to Derry’ series.
Someone else pointed out that this cover has been featured so often lately, they think the character might be the villain in the upcoming Brave and the Bold movie.
A fan noted that this particular comic is the only one where Matt Hagen is the central Clayface character, which explains why it’s been featured repeatedly.
One person cautioned viewers not to anticipate an appearance by Batman in the upcoming Clayface movie, predicting the reaction will be even stronger than it was for the second season of Peacemaker when neither Batman nor Robin showed up. They advise audiences to expect a story that mostly stands on its own.

Someone noted it’s odd that Clayface is planned for a main DC Universe movie instead of being a separate story, like what was done with The Batman or the Joker film.
The film is intentionally part of the main DC Universe, not a separate ‘Elseworlds’ story. While it could simply be a passion project focusing on a character’s origins, that seems unlikely. Even without mentioning Batman directly, the movie will probably lay important groundwork for the world of Gotham City within the DCU.
DC fans will need to wait until the Clayface movie comes out in 2026 to find out more about the character.
