DCU Creator Confirms Clayface’s Official Rating and the Timeline for Its Directors Cut

The upcoming film Clayface tells the story of Matt Hagan (Tom Rhys Harries) and his transformation into one of Batman’s toughest enemies. While some early descriptions of the plot suggested a significant change from the Clayface character in the comics, the filmmakers have promised a terrifying, body-horror experience. The film’s expected R-rating hints at a dark and intense take on the character from DC Studios.

James Gunn, co-president of DC Studios, explained to CBS Mornings that while the upcoming film exists within the DC universe, it will be a standalone horror movie. He emphasized that there won’t be a single, unified style for all DC films, and each movie won’t necessarily feel like a typical Superman film. Instead, the creative teams behind each project—the artists, directors, and writers—will be able to bring their own unique vision to the story. Previously, Peter Safran generated buzz around the Clayface project, describing it as a deeply unsettling body horror film that will explore the origins of the iconic Batman villain. With Clayface expected to receive an R rating, DC Studios appears poised to deliver a genuinely frightening experience.

DC Has More Major Movie Events On The Way

A Clayface movie is planned for release in late 2026. However, DC Studios and Warner Bros. Discovery are continuing to develop a lot of content based on DC Comics, both for theaters and television, and Clayface is just one of the projects James Gunn and Peter Safran are currently working on.

A sequel to the Superman movie is planned, titled Man of Tomorrow. The film will feature a team-up between Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult, and Clark Kent/Superman, played by David Corenswet, as they face a new, bigger danger. Brainiac will be the villain in Man of Tomorrow, though the actor who will play him hasn’t been announced. Fans have suggested Matt Smith for the role, and many think he’d be a great fit.

Robert Pattinson will reprise his role as Batman in The Batman – Part II. While this film won’t be directly linked to the new DC Universe being created by DC Studios, fans are still enthusiastic about it. There’s talk that Scarlett Johansson, known for her work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, might join the cast, but reports suggest Zoe Kravitz won’t be returning as Catwoman.

Clayface arrives in theaters on Sept. 11, 2026.
