The latest DC Comics team-up book is bringing back more than one Milestone Icon.
A preview of the new DC comic Batman/Static: Beyond #1 (from Evan Narcisse, Nikolas Draper-Ivey, Wil Quintana, and Wes Abbott) shows Static taking the lead as the DC Universe enters a new phase. Earth has been considered for inclusion in The Cooperative, a massive intergalactic alliance. However, joining isn’t automatic. Static, along with other powerful heroes, must demonstrate why Earth deserves a place among them, and another of Milestone’s iconic heroes is fighting alongside him.

Icon, also known as Arnus or Augustus Freeman, first appeared in 1993 in the premiere issue of his self-titled comic, created by the late Dwayne McDuffie and artist M.D. Bright. He’s an almost immortal alien whose spaceship crashed in the American South in the mid-1800s. To fit in, he took the form of a Black man and spent centuries pretending to be the descendant of the person he originally resembled. Eventually, he became a modern-day superhero, fighting crime alongside his partner, Raquel Ervin, who goes by the name Rocket.
Fans have been eager to see Terry McGinnis – the Batman of Batman Beyond – team up again with Virgil Hawkins, known as Static, ever since their first encounter in Nikolas Draper-Ivey’s “Static Beyond” story within the 2023 Milestone 30th Anniversary Special. The writer shared that he particularly enjoyed the chemistry he established between Static and Batman in that initial team-up and that a key focus of this new project is exploring the differences between Terry and Virgil.
In a future not too far away, Terry McGinnis is the new Batman, protecting the city of Neo-Gotham as Batman Beyond. Meanwhile, in Dakota City, Virgil Hawkins, known as Static, is launching a groundbreaking energy system called the Q-Wave Energy Grid. Alongside the Justice League Beyond, these heroes are preparing Earth to join a powerful alliance of planets called the Cooperative. Just when everything seems perfect, a new villain appears, threatening to destroy it all. Now, the unlikely team of Static and Batman Beyond must join forces to save the world.
Batman/Static: Beyond #1 goes on sale November 12 from DC Comics.
