David Corenswet will reprise his role as Superman, signaling a fresh start for the iconic character and the DC Universe. While Spider-Man and Batman are incredibly popular, Superman often embodies the very idea of a superhero, and his numerous adaptations demonstrate his lasting influence on the genre.
As a huge Superman fan, it was tough seeing Henry Cavill step down, but I’m really excited about David Corenswet taking on the role in James Gunn’s reboot. He’s the first actor to lead a film in Gunn’s new DC Universe, which really shows how important Superman is to the whole thing. And now, we’ve gotten our first glimpse of what’s next for Superman after his own movie, and it looks like things are heading in a seriously cool direction!
David Corenswet’s Superman Officially Returns In 2026
DC Studios revealed the next trailer for the Supergirl movie will arrive on Tuesday, March 31st. Milly Alcock, known for her role in House of the Dragon, first appeared as Supergirl at the end of the Superman movie released in 2025. Now, DC is returning the favor by including David Corenswet as Superman in the Supergirl film. A brief teaser for the movie showed Superman featured in a newspaper.
Since then, we’ve gotten our first glimpse of David Corenswet as Superman in a short teaser released alongside the announcement of the Supergirl trailer. The teaser shows Superman video-calling Supergirl, asking how she’s doing and saying he misses her. He also asks when she plans to return to Earth.
Superman Starts James Gunn’s DC Universe With A 4-Year Streak
With Superman officially returning to the DC Universe in the 2026 Supergirl movie, it’s confirmed that the hero will appear in a project every year for the first four years of the new franchise. This is similar to how Chris Evans played Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in at least one MCU film or series for nine consecutive years.
Superman recently made his first appearance in the new DC Universe (DCU) as a brief, silent cameo in the animated series Creature Commandos. In a vision of a potential future, the villain Princess Ilana Rostovic killed Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and other DC heroes. This vision was shown to Amanda Waller by Circe in the December 19, 2024 episode of Creature Commandos, titled “Chasing Squirrels.”
David Corenswet first appeared as Superman in his own movie slated for release in 2025. He’ll be back this year in Supergirl, and then will team up with Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor to battle Brainiac in the 2027 film, Man of Tomorrow. Following criticism of Henry Cavill’s departure from the DCEU, the new DCU is establishing David Corenswet as the definitive Superman for future films.
