As a movie buff with a penchant for soaps and a soft spot for long-running series, I find myself deeply saddened by the news of Wayne Northrop’s passing. His portrayal of Detective Roman Brady on Days of Our Lives was nothing short of iconic, and his six-year battle with Alzheimer’s, fought in the arms of his family, is a testament to his strength and resilience.
Wayne Northrop, well-known for playing Detective Roman Brady on the soap opera Days of our Lives, has passed away at the age of 77. Six years ago, he was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s, as confirmed by a statement obtained by People. His wife, actress Lynn Herring Northrop, wrote that he took his last breath surrounded by family. “He was an exceptional husband for 43 years, the most wonderful father to our sons Hank and Grady, and a devoted rancher who cherished his cows and was admired by many,” she said. The Motion Picture and Television Home is thanked for the care they provided him during his illness.
Born in 1947, in Sumner, Washington, Northrop is recognized not just for his roles on “Days of Our Lives”, but also for portraying Michael Culhane on “Dynasty” and Rexford “Rex” Stanton on “Port Charles”. In addition to acting, he tied the knot with Lynn Herring in 1981. Beyond the silver screen, the Northrops managed a cattle ranch and were passionate about wildlife conservation and sustainable farming practices.
Wayne Northrop was one of three actors who portrayed the character Roman Brady on the popular soap opera over a span of decades. He first took on the role from 1981 to 1984, and his character seemingly met his end in the arms of his brother Bo. From 1986-1991, Drake Hogestyn played a character believed to be Roman Brady (but was actually John Black). Northrop reprised his role as the genuine Roman Brady from 1991 until another supposed death in 1994. In 1997, Roman made yet another comeback, this time with Josh Taylor stepping into the role. Tragically, Wayne Northrop passed away this year, following the death of Drake Hogestyn in September.
