David Lynch’s weather reports made him a YouTube phenomenon

David Lynch, recognized for his surreal, spooky, occasionally nightmarish movie and television projects, has also made a remarkable impact on digital culture with an astonishingly iconic YouTube series that might surprise his fans.

In simple terms, David Lynch’s movies and television shows have solidified his position as a unique and influential director during our time.

His distinct perspective earned him numerous Emmy and Oscar nominations for cherished shows like Twin Peaks, along with movies such as The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, and Mulholland Drive.

In more recent times, I’ve been captivated by the unexpected return of a revered filmmaker on YouTube, who has charmed us all with an infectious series of uplifting videos that have swept across the web like wildfire.

Lynch’s Weather Reports became internet legend

David Lynch’s well-known weather forecasts started around the mid-2000s on his now-closed website (as chronicled by Know Your Meme). In these videos, Lynch is seen in his home studio in Los Angeles, sharing the weather as he gazes out of his window. The videos typically conclude with Lynch cheerfully predicting “clear skies and bright sunshine.

Weather updates had halted for a while, but starting from May 11, 2020, they were back, with David Lynch picking up where he left off, posting them on his YouTube channel called ‘David Lynch Theater’.

Most of the fresh weather updates start off cheerfully with a lively “Good morning!”, followed by stating the date and providing details about the local weather conditions.

Every Friday was a special day filled with magic for the filmmaker, who would express his excitement by saying “and amazingly, it’s another Friday!” He kept this up until his last recording on December 16, 2022. Sometimes he would move the camera or provide additional commentary, encouraging viewers to have a fantastic day.

Each day’s videos garnered approximately half a million views collectively, with a singular video on YouTube reaching 282K, while it was also widely shared on social media outlets such as Twitter (previously known as X) and Facebook.

Truly saddened by the news. David Lynch was an extraordinary visionary who served as a constant source of inspiration. During the pandemic, his daily weather updates provided comfort like a trusted friend…

Admirers cherished the spontaneous, upbeat outbursts, which boosted Lynch’s temporary YouTube stint as a beloved content producer. Today, his “Interview Project,” initially launched online in 2009, can be found on YouTube too. This series saw him traversing the United States to chat with ordinary people.
