As a cinema enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of modern filmmaking over the past three decades, I can confidently say that the upcoming 4K Ultra HD release of David Fincher’s masterpiece “Se7en” is an event worth celebrating. Having grown up with this gripping crime thriller as part of my formative years in cinematography, it’s a joy to see its pristine restoration and IMAX debut.
To honor the 30th anniversary of David Fincher’s crime thriller “Se7en”, it will make its digital debut for the first time in stunning 4K Ultra HD on Jan. 7. You can purchase the physical 4K UHD Blu-ray Disc online or at major retailers, while the digital version will be streamable on platforms like Amazon Prime Video, AppleTV, Google Play, Fandango at Home and others. Furthermore, for a limited time, “Se7en” will also be shown in IMAX theaters across more than 150 domestic locations.
In my opinion, “Se7en,” which was Director Fincher’s second masterpiece following his work on “Alien 3,” was penned by Andrew Kevin Walker, known for “The Killer.” This gripping tale brought together a host of future A-listers, such as Brad Pitt, Gwyneth Paltrow, Morgan Freeman, and Kevin Spacey. The plot follows the journey of two dedicated cops, portrayed by Pitt and Freeman, as they pursue a ruthless killer, played by Spacey, who systematically chooses victims he believes have committed one of the seven deadly sins.

In 1995, the movie “Se7en” significantly boosted David Fincher’s standing as a director, showcasing his exceptional technical skills, attention to detail, and visual prowess. Since then, he has directed numerous critically acclaimed films such as “The Game” (1997), “Fight Club” (1999), “Zodiac” (2007), “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” (2008), “The Social Network” (2010), “Gone Girl” (2014), “Mank” (2020) and the upcoming “The Killer” (2023). Despite being nominated three times for the Academy Award for Best Director (in 2009, 2011, and 2021), Fincher has yet to take home a win in this category.
The high-definition remastering of “Se7en” has been finished at Warner Bros. Discovery’s Motion Picture Imaging studio, utilizing the original camera negative as its source. This restoration was supervised by Fincher himself. Starting from January 3, 2025, moviegoers will have a unique opportunity to watch this film on IMAX screens for a limited time.
