The latest version of The Rockford Files, starring David Boreanaz, is taking the show in a new and interesting direction compared to the original.
David Boreanaz, a familiar face from TV shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Bones, and SEAL Team, will star in NBC’s new version of The Rockford Files. The original Rockford Files aired on NBC from 1974 to 1980 and starred James Garner. While the reboot is still being developed as a pilot, casting is progressing well.
Award-winning actress Jacki Weaver, who has been nominated for an Oscar twice, is joining the cast of NBC’s reboot of The Rockford Files. She will play a brand new character named Karma, who isn’t connected to the original 1970s series. Karma is a long-time neighbor of Rockford (played by Boreanaz) in a trailer park, and she’s known for being both strong-willed and a sharp analyst.
Weaver will appear in The Rockford Files, joining Michaela McManus, who plays a love interest for Rockford. This isn’t the first time Boreanaz and McManus have played a couple – they previously had romantic roles together on the show SEAL Team.

The updated Rockford Files begins with James Rockford being released from prison after being wrongly convicted of a crime. He returns to his job as a private investigator, using his personality and intelligence to crack cases all over Los Angeles. Despite appearing hardened, Rockford has a strong sense of right and wrong, which quickly puts him on the radar of both law enforcement and the criminal underworld.
Jacki Weaver is an acclaimed actress with two Academy Award nominations. She was first recognized for her supporting role in the crime thriller Animal Kingdom, and later for her work in the drama Silver Linings Playbook. More recently, she’s appeared on television as Caroline Warner in Yellowstone and as Barbara Billings in the Apple TV+ series Hello Tomorrow!
The revival series is being produced by Universal Television, and the pilot episode is written by Mike Daniels, known for his work on shows like Sons of Anarchy and One Tree Hill. Boreanaz is also a producer on the project, and filming for the pilot will take place in both Los Angeles and Atlanta. This series is part of a larger effort by NBC to develop new pilots, alongside dramas starring Emily Deschanel, Peter Krause, and Jake Johnson.
When a TV show is ‘in pilot’ status, it hasn’t been officially greenlit yet. Network executives will review a sample episode (the pilot) and then decide whether to move forward with the series or cancel it. Initial reactions are good, and the family of Jennifer Garner has given their blessing to a potential reboot of The Rockford Files.
