Dave Bautista Says Drax ‘Ran Its Course,’ So He Told James Gunn and the Russo Bros. He’ll Play a New Marvel or DC Superhero: ‘Don’t Count Me Out’

Dave Bautista has reached out to James Gunn (now leading DC Studios following their work together on “Guardians of the Galaxy” films) and the Russo Brothers (known for directing him in “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Endgame”) to show interest in portraying a fresh comic book hero character in upcoming movies. Previously, Dave Bautista was Drax the Destroyer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but he has moved on from that part.

Bautista stated, “Drax remains inaccessible to me. Unless James Gunn personally reaches out to me about reprising the role of Drax, I wouldn’t be inclined to do so. But seeing as he’s now focusing on other projects with DC, it’s unlikely that he’ll contact me.

He went on saying, ‘I truly wish to belong in that realm.’ He’s an admirer of this universe, specifically comic books and both Marvel and DC. He’s expressed his interest to James and the Russo Brothers, even speaking with them privately about it. He told them, ‘Please don’t exclude me. If there’s a character I’d suit well and you need, I’d be more than willing to consider it.’ However, he feels that the Drax character has reached its limit.

Bautista concluded his tenure as Drax in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” released in 2023. Since he isn’t keen on portraying the character without Gunn directing, it seems likely that Drax won’t feature in the Russo Brothers’ upcoming “Avengers” films, titled “Doomsday” (2026) and “Secret Wars” (2027). Last year, Bautista expressed his desire to explore a villain role within comic books.

He expressed his desire for more significant and diverse roles back then, possibly darker ones. His dream was to portray a menacing villain in the superhero world. However, he’s not finished yet; his time as Drax has come to an end.

2023 saw Bautista making news when he expressed to GQ magazine that the end of his role as Drax in the Marvel Cinematic Universe brought him “relief.” He further mentioned that playing the character wasn’t always enjoyable, stating: “The makeup process was tough on me. I’m not sure if I want Drax to be my lasting impression – it’s a humorous role, and I aspire to take on more serious, dramatic parts instead.

In 2021, Bautista expressed to Collider that Marvel missed an opportunity to truly portray Drax effectively on the silver screen, as he felt the character’s rich backstory remained largely unexplored.
