Looking for a good Western TV show? You can’t go wrong with Dark Winds, a series that started in 2022 and has a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Yellowstone helped bring Westerns back to television, and now there are a lot of great options available.
If you’ve already enjoyed popular Westerns like Yellowstone, Deadwood, and more recent shows such as Justified, you might be ready for something new. If you have AMC+ or Netflix, or another way to watch, consider checking out Dark Winds, which is getting another season.
What Is Dark Winds About?
I’m really enjoying Dark Winds! It’s adapted from the fantastic Leaphorn & Chee book series by Tony Hillerman – there are 18 novels in total, all set in the West and full of mystery. The show features Zahn McClarnon as Joe Leaphorn, a lieutenant with the tribal police in Kayenta, and Kiowa Gordon plays Jim Chee, who’s working undercover for the FBI. It’s a great combination!
The series starts with Chee going undercover as a Navajo police officer to investigate an armored truck robbery in New Mexico. Officer Leaphorn soon realizes what’s happening and persuades Chee to become a double agent, leveraging his connections with the FBI to assist in solving a separate case involving two murders.
By the end of the first season, honestly, I was right there with Chee – the FBI just didn’t feel like the right fit anymore. He realized he’d rather team up with Leaphorn and join the tribal police full-time. And that’s where things really got interesting! The next couple of seasons follow Leaphorn, Chee, and Sergeant Manuelito as they travel all over the Four Corners region in the 1970s, tackling all sorts of cases. It’s a great setup for some classic crime-solving!
How Dark Winds Is Different From Other Westerns
Dark Winds isn’t your typical Western. It’s a compelling and layered crime drama that feels both classic and contemporary. While it echoes the Westerns of the past, it also incorporates modern storytelling techniques. What truly sets it apart, though, is its cast.
As a fan, what really struck me about Dark Winds is how it centers Native American characters. It’s a big deal! Westerns have always involved Native Americans, but they’re often just background characters, even in shows trying to do better. But Dark Winds? This story simply couldn’t be told without a cast of Native American actors – it feels authentic and important because of it.
Dark Winds Season 4 Is Coming
Get ready for season 4 of Dark Winds! Before the new season arrives, now’s a good time to rewatch or catch up on all 20 episodes from the first three seasons. Season 4, consisting of eight episodes, will debut on February 15, 2026, and conclude on April 5, 2026. After receiving perfect scores from critics, fans are hoping the new season continues the show’s winning streak on Rotten Tomatoes.
