Dark Winds Season 4, Episode 5 Ending Explained: What Chee Saw At Leroy’s Apartment

In the latest episode of Dark Winds season 4, Jim Chee’s struggles with ghost sickness are intensifying, and he’s haunted by a puzzling figure from his past. This week’s episode finds Leaphorn, Chee, and Manuelito working with the FBI in Los Angeles while continuing their search for Billie Tsosie. Their investigation is quickly pulling them into a large and potentially dangerous criminal conspiracy.

Several important things happened this week that are fairly straightforward. Billie saw a picture of Leroy with a woman she recognized as her mother, leading her to believe Leroy is hiding at her home. However, the NTP officers are currently unaware of this information. They’re also dealing with their own issues, particularly Chee, which require further investigation.

Okay, so I just finished the latest episode of Dark Winds and wow, things are getting really intense! Poor Jim Chee is really struggling with the ghost sickness this time – it felt way worse than ever before. He was searching Leroy Gorman’s place, and not only did he have another bloody nose, but that old chest wound looked seriously infected. But the really creepy part? He found something wrapped in blankets that sounded like it was… breathing. It was honestly terrifying!

Chee realized the blankets weren’t just blankets – they were a vision of his deceased mother. Earlier in the episode, he’d shared with Sonny Bear Heart that his mother had passed away from lung cancer. The sound of labored breathing, combined with quick memories of his childhood triggered by seeing the blankets, confirmed that his mother was lying beneath them.

Chee is clearly still deeply affected by his mother’s death. He’s experiencing intense, recurring memories of discovering her body, though these memories are internal and not real. He needs to address these painful emotions, and finding spiritual healing through his Navajo traditions seems like the path forward. It’s uncertain whether he will embrace this path, though.

How Sonny Found Chee & Was He Really Asleep?

Chee had a disturbing vision of his mother’s body, and his search of Leroy Gorman’s apartment was suddenly stopped by Sonny Bear Heart. Chee had found Gorman’s address by secretly looking through Sonny’s files while he was passed out from medical attention for a gunshot wound. Sonny could only have known Chee was there if he had pretended to be asleep and watched him search his belongings.

Okay, so the moment that Navajo woman acknowledged Chee, that’s when things really started to unravel for him, in my opinion. Sonny immediately picked up on it – she’d never spoken to him before in all his time at the complex. It was a huge red flag. Chee was pretending to be this ‘Mike’ character from Arizona, and her recognition instantly suggested he wasn’t being truthful about who he was. It pretty much blew his whole cover story wide open, and I think Sonny realized it right then and there.

Sonny unexpectedly proved quite capable, managing to surprise Chee. While Chee’s illness made things harder for him, he’s now in a dangerous spot. Fortunately, Chee asked Leaphorn to meet him at Gorman’s place before things got worse. This means Leaphorn and Bernadette are likely heading to help Chee in the sixth episode of Dark Winds season 4.

Leaphorn Discovered That Irene Killed An FBI Agent

This week on Dark Winds, the show returned to the story of the man Irene killed in season 4, episode 4. In that episode, Irene broke into a man’s home, killed him, and made it look like a suicide. We now know that man was Ken Upchurch, an FBI agent leading the investigation into Dominic McNair. Irene killed him to disrupt the FBI’s investigation of her boss.

When Leaphorn learned Irene’s green van had been seen near Upchurch’s home, he realized Upchurch hadn’t taken his own life. He found a can opener, the type used on German military rations, and traced it back to Irene. This discovery impressed the FBI and should help Leaphorn and Bernadette get the assistance they need to find Billie Tsosie. Irene, however, understood that Leaphorn hadn’t stopped investigating, even after she tried to intimidate him.

Titus Welliver’s Dominic McNair In Dark Winds Season 4 Explained

Michael Moriatis/AMC

This week’s episode of Dark Winds revealed the full role of Titus Welliver’s character. He plays Dominic McNair, a San Pedro-based businessman whose import/export company, McNair Factoring, is under FBI investigation for illegal activities. The FBI’s scrutiny suggests McNair is involved in smuggling, most likely drugs, across the border.

We discovered the reason Irene works for McNair: he’s facing FBI charges, but the case is falling apart. Witnesses are either disappearing or refusing to testify, and the prosecutor doesn’t think they can win. It’s obvious McNair hired Irene to silence or scare those witnesses. This also suggests Leroy Gorman is connected to McNair’s legal troubles somehow.
