Back in 2010, Visceral Games and Electronic Arts created the action game Dante’s Inferno, which was similar to God of War. The game drew inspiration from Dante Alighieri’s famous poem, The Divine Comedy, telling the story of Dante’s journey through Hell to save his wife, Beatrice, from Lucifer and his demons. Recently, after 15 years, details have surfaced regarding a canceled follow-up, Dante’s Inferno 2: Purgatorio.
IGN published a detailed report on Purgatorio, diving deep into its story. The game was originally planned as a counterpart to the first installment, with Dante climbing Mount Purgatory to find Beatrice and ultimately reach the Garden of Eden at its peak. Each level of the mountain would have symbolized one of the Seven Deadly Sins, and Dante would have needed to overcome both his own flaws and the physical manifestation of each sin to progress.
Dante would have been caught in a conflict between Heaven and Hell, a war he accidentally started by letting Lucifer out of Hell and into Purgatory. He would have been guided on his quest by St. Lucia, his guardian angel from a previous story, and the poet Virgil. To succeed, Dante would have needed to overcome powerful, hostile archangels.
Dante believed he had finally found peace with Beatrice, overcoming her darker aspects. However, as they reached Heaven, he discovered he’d been tricked by Lucifer. In a shocking twist, Lucifer used Beatrice to kill Dante, sending him back to Hell. The ending offered a small comfort: St. Lucia’s spirit revealed that even this tragic death was part of a larger divine plan.
The planned sequel, Dante’s Inferno 3: Paradiso, would have shifted the conflict between Heaven and Hell to Earth. It would have featured the daughter of Dante and Beatrice, fighting with angels as a mortal warrior to rescue Heaven from Lucifer and save Beatrice. The story would have also revealed God’s plan: to replace the strict system of sending souls to Heaven or Hell with a more merciful one.
Sadly, these concepts probably won’t ever become a game. However, it’s still fascinating to see what might have been possible.
