Daniel Radcliffe Shares Advice With New Harry Potter TV Show Cast

Daniel Radcliffe shared the advice he gave to the new actor taking on the role of Harry Potter in a personal letter. Fourteen years after the last movie, a TV remake of Harry Potter is being filmed with a fresh cast: Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton will be playing the iconic characters previously portrayed by Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson.

While promoting his upcoming Broadway play, Every Brilliant Thing, on Good Morning America, Daniel Radcliffe shared that he wrote a supportive letter to Matthew Lewis after Lewis was cast as Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter TV series.

The award-winning performer told the young boy he hoped he’d have a wonderful time, and even a better experience than he himself had.

McLaughlin wrote a truly heartwarming note in response to Radcliffe, but the actor kept the contents of his reply private.

Radcliffe said he’s seen the recently released photos of McLaughlin, Stout, and Stanton, and feels a strong urge to hug them because they appear so youthful. He’s amazed when he remembers being their age himself.

I didn’t feel the need to formally apply or reach out to be considered for the role of Harry. I do know some people involved in the new production, so I simply wrote a letter to Dominic to wish him well. He sent a lovely note back! I just wanted to tell him I hope he enjoys the experience even more than I did – I had a fantastic time. Seeing pictures of him and the other young actors is sweet, but also a bit strange, as it reminds me how young we all were when we filmed the originals. I just want to give them all a hug and hope they’re having a wonderful time.

Daniel Radcliffe played the main role in all eight Harry Potter films. The movies earned more than $7 billion worldwide and launched Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson to international fame.

Following the end of the Harry Potter films, Daniel Radcliffe continued to act in a variety of movies and TV shows, including The Woman in Black, Kill Your Darlings, Victor Frankenstein, Swiss Army Man, Now You See Me 2, The Lost City, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, and Miracle Workers.

At 36, he’s become a Broadway star, appearing in leading roles in plays and musicals like Equus, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, The Cripple of Inishmaan, The Lifespan of a Fact, and Merrily We Roll Along – for which he won a Tony Award.

Having become famous very young himself, Daniel Radcliffe understands what newcomer McLaughlin is likely to go through when the new Harry Potter series premieres in 2027.

Filming for the first season is underway, and McLaughlin has already been seen on set with Nick Frost, who will be playing Hagrid, and the actors portraying the Dursleys: Daniel Rigby, Bel Powley, and Amos Kitson.

The upcoming Harry Potter TV series will also star John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape. Warwick Davis is the only actor from the Harry Potter films returning to the show – he’ll be reprising his role as Professor Flitwick.

Given how well the original films did in theaters, it wasn’t surprising that Warner Bros. wanted to continue the series with the Fantastic Beasts prequels. Although the new series began promisingly, it ultimately ended on a disappointing note, with lackluster reviews and controversy surrounding Johnny Depp, who had to be replaced by Mads Mikkelsen.

Warner Bros. is starting over with a new TV adaptation of the original seven books. This version aims to be a more accurate retelling of the story compared to the previous movies.

Just as Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson became well-known, McLaughlin, Stout, and Stanton could achieve similar recognition. A recent letter from Radcliffe to the new cast shows that everyone connected to the series—both past and present—wants these young actors to succeed as they navigate a level of fame they haven’t experienced before.

The Harry Potter TV show will premiere in 2027 on HBO.
