Daniel Radcliffe reveals how original Harry Potter cast reacted to HBO show

So, everyone’s getting hyped for the new Harry Potter series on HBO, and I just read that Daniel Radcliffe talked about how he and the original cast found out about the new actors. It’s cool to hear what they thought about the recast – I’m super curious to see how the new series turns out, and it’s neat knowing the original crew is watching too!

HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series will cover one book from the franchise per season. This approach will allow the creators to explore the story’s details more thoroughly.

In May 2025, HBO revealed the cast for its new series, including Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. Veteran actors John Lithgow and Nick Frost will also star as Professor Dumbledore and Rubeus Hagrid, respectively.

Even though the show isn’t coming out until 2027, Daniel Radcliffe has shared his initial reaction to the news, along with Emma Watson and Rupert Grint.

Daniel Radcliffe say the original Harry Potter stars just want to hug the new cast

Daniel Radcliffe recently talked to People magazine about his upcoming show, ‘The Rise and Fall of Reggie Dinkins.’ He described watching a new group of actors begin their ‘Harry Potter’-like journey as ‘surreal,’ and shared his memories of how he and his fellow cast members reacted when they first learned about the series.

He explained that there’s a shared understanding among them because they’re all experiencing the same emotions. Seeing pictures of the children evokes a strong desire to comfort and protect them, and he believes that’s a universal feeling they all share.

The conversation prompted Radcliffe to think back on his time filming the Harry Potter movies, and he now recognizes how incredibly young he was when he first started the series.

When you’re eleven, it feels like you’re mature enough to handle anything, because it’s the most experience you’ve had so far. But now, when I meet kids that age, it strikes me how young they really are. It makes you realize how much things change as you get older.

Radcliffe expressed his gratitude towards his parents for helping him manage the pressures of starring in such a large film series. He admitted he didn’t fully appreciate their efforts at the time, but now realizes how much they did, especially their ability to keep things lighthearted while guiding him through a very challenging experience.

Daniel Radcliffe doesn’t plan to reprise his role as Harry Potter. He stated in 2023 that he’s happy to see others take over the character and doesn’t believe his physical involvement is necessary.

David Thewlis, who famously played Professor Lupin in the Harry Potter films starting with ‘Prisoner of Azkaban,’ has also said he doesn’t plan to reprise the role. He recently told TopMob he’s honestly tired of discussing the series.

Okay, so I just read that David Thewlis, who played Professor Lupin, basically said he’s done with the Harry Potter universe. He’s had his fill, apparently! He said he’s honestly tired of even talking about it, which, honestly, I kinda get. It was a huge part of his life, but sometimes you just need to move on, you know? As a fan, it’s a little sad to hear, but I respect that he wants to do other things.
