Daniel Auteuil, a renowned actor and director, along with his frequent collaborator Jean-Baptiste Pouilloux, have established their next projects with Les Films Velvet. This production company is known for its focus on auteurs and was behind the opening film of this year’s Unifrance Rendez-Vous in Paris, titled “The Musicians”. Additionally, they are involved in Rebecca Zlotowski’s upcoming thriller, “Vie Privée”, which stars Jodie Foster.
Following my acclaimed legal thriller, “An Ordinary Case,” which premiered at Cannes last year, I’m returning to the director’s chair for the gripping World War II drama, “One Night.” Penned by me and the esteemed filmmaker Camille Lugan (“The Book of Joy”), this film recounts an astonishing true tale from 1942. In the heart-wrenching narrative, we follow a daring attempt to save over one hundred Jewish children from a deportation camp near Lyon, just in time. Les Films Velvet’s Frederic Jouve will produce this poignant project alongside Adrien Nussenbaum. As I delve into this emotional journey, I can’t help but feel the weight of history on my shoulders, eager to share this untold story with the world.
A highly sought-after assistant director, Pouilloux, has collaborated extensively with directors such as Jacques Audiard, Zlotowski, Nadav Lapid, and lately helmed the second unit on “Emilia Perez.” Now, Pouilloux is set to direct his first feature film, “Merci Maman” (translates to “Thanks Mom”), a humorous take on life. The script for this movie was penned by Pouilloux himself, revolving around a mother who persuades her son to attend couples therapy with her. At present, the film is in casting phase, with plans to start production later in 2021.
Velvet is preparing for the filming of comedian Charlotte Gabris’ first directorial project titled “Au Frais.” In collaboration with Marine Alaric from Orta Films, this humorous feature tells the story of a 38-year-old woman who, after being dumped by her boyfriend, receives a suggestion from her concerned family to freeze her eggs in Barcelona.
Moving forward, Velvet is creating additional elements inspired by Thierry de Peretti’s “In His Own Image,” Guillaume Renusson’s “White Paradise,” and Farid Bentoumi’s “Red Soil,” as well as the Amazon series “Glam Squad,” which was developed by Zlotowski and Olivier Nicklaus.
It’s something Jouve takes great pride in that almost all the mentioned directors have collaborated with Les Films Velvet in the past. He values this group significantly, viewing them as his “cultivated” artists.
Jouve emphasizes to EbMaster the importance of considering the future: “Careers progress through numerous projects, so I’m less concerned about creating a single success and more focused on nurturing filmmakers, planning ahead, and growing together. Rebecca Zlotowski is an ideal demonstration. We have collaborated on six films, starting with her very first, and we are already working on additional projects.
