CZ-Backed YZi Labs Considers Letting In the Crowds with $10B Fund: But Only After a Little AI & Biotech Tweaking

In the latest dispatch from the ever-so-persistent world of venture capitalism, Nikou Asgari of the Financial Times informs us that the Changpeng “CZ” Zhao-backed YZi Labs is on the verge of revealing a most tantalizing prospect: opening up its $10 billion war chest to outside investors. But, of course, there’s a catch-like any self-respecting investment firm worth its salt, they’re holding off until they’re sufficiently beefed up in the realms of artificial intelligence (AI) and biotech. Naturally, because who would want to manage $10 billion without a healthy dose of futuristic tech on the side?

YZi Labs, helmed by the ever-astute Ella Zhang, is apparently “considering” the idea of shifting gears and transforming into an external-facing fund. It’s not quite ready to throw open the gates to eager investors just yet. Ella, the head honcho, told Asgari with all the seriousness of someone contemplating a second slice of cake, “There’s always a lot of external investors interested, and we will eventually consider turning it into an external-facing fund. We just think it’s not there yet.” In other words, hold your horses, folks-there’s more AI and biotech tinkering to be done before YZi Labs lets anyone else have a taste of the action. Patience, grasshopper. 🦗

Interestingly, YZi Labs did accept around $300 million in third-party funds back in 2022. However, in a move that can only be described as playing hard-to-get, they partially returned the money. It seems the firm is keen on pacing itself. After all, when you’re dealing with billions, it’s all about taking small, calculated steps. In the meantime, they’re focusing on expanding their team and refining their due diligence processes. Only when the foundations are properly set will they entertain the idea of taking on external commitments. Talk about taking it slow-like a finely aged bottle of wine 🍷-but with a little extra biotech sparkle, of course.

For now, YZi Labs is content to keep things internal while laying the groundwork for the grand external transition. Will they open up the floodgates? Only time will tell-but you can bet there’ll be more AI and biotech wizardry involved before anyone else gets a seat at this very exclusive table. 🧠💸
