Cynthia Erivo Denies Speaking With Academy About Performing ‘Wicked’ Songs at the Oscars: ‘I Don’t Know Why We Would Be Doing That’

Cynthia Erivo has been nominated for an Oscar in the Best Actress category for “Wicked,” but there are expectations that she will have a more prominent role during the ceremony. According to reports from Puck, the Academy is considering starting the broadcast with a medley of songs from “Wicked” performed by Cynthia Erivo and her co-star Ariana Grande.

Erivo expressed her confusion during an interview with Marc Malkin from EbMaster’s at the Critics’ Choice Awards red carpet event. When questioned about the rumor, she said, “I can’t trace its origin, but it seems like speculation to me. On what possible grounds would we be singing?

After being inquired about it directly, I clarified that there’s been no discussion between me and the Academy regarding a performance. “Absolutely not!” I declared, looking straight into the camera lens. “There seems to be speculation about us performing at the Oscars. Frankly, I can’t fathom why we would be doing so, given our song wasn’t nominated. That’s just not how it works. Honestly, I don’t know what else to say on the matter.

Erivo’s denial doesn’t have a completely solid reasoning because, unlike past ceremonies, the Academy has announced that none of the nominees for Best Original Song will be performed this year. Instead, the focus is on personal reflections from the songwriters during the show.

Apart from receiving an Oscar nomination, Erivo has also been nominated in the best actress category for Friday night’s Critics’ Choice Awards. Interestingly, both “Wicked” and “Conclave” lead the nominations with a total of eleven nods each, across all categories. You can find the complete list of winners by following this link.
