CD Projekt Red, the creators of Cyberpunk 2077, are partnering with WeirdCo to create an official physical trading card game based on the Cyberpunk universe. The game will include characters and elements from both the Cyberpunk 2077 video game and the Edgerunners anime, staying true to the world’s established lore.
IGN recently announced a new project resulting from a collaboration between CD Projekt Red and WeirdCo. Both companies are excited to adapt the Cyberpunk universe into a trading card game. This will be CD Projekt Red’s first foray into physical TCGs.
Elliot Cook, co-founder of WeirdCo, explained that the team is passionate about the Cyberpunk world and carefully built their trading card game based on it. They drew inspiration not just from the video game Cyberpunk 2077 and the Edgerunners anime, but also from the original Dark Horse comic books. Throughout the entire development process, they meticulously examined every aspect, always striving to ensure the game felt true to the spirit of Cyberpunk.
A new trailer from WeirdCo offers a glimpse into the gameplay of their upcoming card game, but the developers are keeping most of the details under wraps. The trailer showcases cards featuring tough enforcers called ‘huscle’ from different groups, along with cyberware and character cards – including popular characters like Panam, Judy, and Jackie from Cyberpunk 2077.
Choosing which popular characters to include in the first set was difficult, and it seems CD Projekt Red helped with the decision. According to Patrick Mills, who leads franchise content strategy, the main goal was to capture the essence of Cyberpunk 2077 by featuring its most recognizable and well-loved characters.
The first release of the Cyberpunk TCG will feature popular characters from Cyberpunk 2077, like V, Johnny, and the villain Adam Smasher. It will also include characters from the Edgerunners anime, and players who sign up for the game’s mailing list early will receive a Lucy card as a bonus.
I’m really excited about how WeirdCo is bringing the Cyberpunk universe to a trading card game! Luohan Wei, one of the founders, explained they’ve taken some of the best parts of the Cyberpunk video game – things like taking on jobs and assembling a team – and built them right into the card game. He thinks it’s a great mix of staying true to the Cyberpunk feel while also bringing something new and fresh to the TCG world, and honestly, I think he’s right!
Even with support from CD Projekt Red, the creators of the Cyberpunk TCG, WeirdCo, are turning to crowdfunding to finish development. They plan to launch a Kickstarter campaign sometime next year and will share more details about the game and how it plays as the launch date approaches.
