Cyberpunk is currently very popular on TV. We’re seeing adaptations of classic stories like Blade Runner and William Gibson’s Neuromancer, with Prime Video and Apple TV leading the way. While Amazon’s The Peripheral didn’t last long, and the Terminator story got an anime makeover, it shows the growing interest in this futuristic style.
Netflix entered the cyberpunk genre with its anime series, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, released in 2022. The show is set a year before the events of the Cyberpunk 2077 video game. While the game faced numerous technical problems and legal challenges, the anime quickly gained widespread praise. Its success even led people to reconsider the video game in a more positive light.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Was A Nice Addition To The Video Game Franchise
Adapting popular video games into TV series has become increasingly common, with varying degrees of success. While Fallout has been well-received by both dedicated fans and general audiences, Halo strayed so far from its source material that it ended up as a typical, unremarkable military sci-fi show – essentially what someone unfamiliar with the game might expect it to be.
Okay, so as someone who loves movies and TV, I was really into the first season of HBO’s The Last of Us – it was almost perfect. But honestly, when they started adapting the sequel in season two, things just fell apart. Meanwhile, Netflix has been quietly killing it with video game adaptations, and Arcane is a prime example – it’s seriously good!
Arcane delivers everything longtime League of Legends players could want, but it’s also a fantastic show for anyone who’s never played the game. It felt like a truly special adaptation – one that pleased both fans and newcomers – and surprisingly, Netflix has managed to create another show just as good in a short amount of time.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners features captivating characters, stunning animation, and a richly detailed world that attracted both fans of the original game and viewers simply looking for a great cyberpunk story. The show achieved a rare perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and every positive review was well-earned.
The Edgerunners series is surprisingly better than the Cyberpunk 2077 game itself. While the game aimed for ambitious themes, it didn’t quite deliver. Edgerunners successfully tells the story Cyberpunk 2077 tried – and failed – to convey, bringing those ideas to life effectively.
Edgerunners Arrived At The Perfect Time For Cyberpunk Fans
The Edgerunners animated series came out at just the right moment to help restore the reputation of the Cyberpunk franchise. When Cyberpunk 2077 launched in 2020, reviews were complicated. While critics praised the game’s visuals, story, and detailed world, and fans loved Keanu Reeves’ performance, players were disappointed by the numerous bugs and technical problems.
The game had so many problems that Sony temporarily removed it from its online store for six months while the developers worked to fix them. When the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners series was released in 2022, the franchise was beginning to rebuild its reputation with players – and gain back customers – after a difficult launch.
Since its release, Cyberpunk 2077 has received several updates and fixes that have largely resolved the initial bugs. Combined with the Phantom Liberty expansion and the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime series, this has led to a more positive view of the game. Sometimes, unexpected spin-offs – like the Edgerunners anime or the Andor series – can be exactly what a franchise needs to regain momentum.
