CD Projekt Red has finally explained why Cyberpunk 2077 has so many elevator rides. Developers have confirmed they weren’t a trick to mask loading times, putting an end to a popular rumor.
Okay, so for ages, everyone playing Cyberpunk 2077 figured those super long elevator rides were just a sneaky way to hide loading screens – you know, like in the old Mass Effect games. The game’s world is HUGE and the buildings are massive, so it totally made sense. But apparently, the developers just came out and said we were wrong about that! It’s not a loading trick after all.
Igor Sarzynski, the creative director for Cyberpunk 2077, recently addressed and debunked something on BlueSky.
CD Projekt Red says elevators were never hiding load times
Sarzynski jokingly complained about the way Cyberpunk 2077 handles loading screens. They pointed out the absurdity of using elevator rides as disguised loading screens when players can seamlessly explore an entire city and enter large buildings without them. It doesn’t make sense to need a loading screen for just a penthouse!
According to Sarzynski, Night City features many elevators simply because the city is designed to reach upwards, not to mask game loading times. As a tall, high-tech city, elevators are a normal and expected part of its structure.

People on the Cyberpunk subreddit confirmed this, explaining that elevators are often used to create breaks in the action and allow story elements to unfold, rather than simply being a way to move between areas. One player pointed out that elevators will sometimes slow down on purpose, like during important conversations with President Myers in Dogtown, to make sure you don’t miss key dialogue.
One player pointed out the Arasaka Tower section of the main story, where the elevator ride is deliberately slowed down to allow for conversations. Similarly, in these situations, the game’s speed is controlled by the story, not by technical limitations like loading times.
CD Projekt Red explains that the elevators in Cyberpunk 2077 aren’t just for getting around – they’re carefully designed to make the game world feel more believable and engaging. The developers also confirmed that the often-long elevator rides aren’t hiding loading times, debunking a popular rumor among players.
