Cyberpunk 2077 dev explains why extending Act 1 would kill the game. „We always planned it that way”

It’s been five years since Cyberpunk 2077 was released, which is a long time in the fast-moving world of video games. Despite its age, the game continues to attract and keep players engaged.

The first part of the game’s story continues to be a point of discussion among players. While many enjoyed the scenes showing how the main character and Jackie became friends and wish they could replay them, the developers believe extending that section would detract from the overall pacing, as it’s important to move the story forward to the Arasaka heist.

On BlueSky, Igor Sarzynski of CD Projekt RED explained that making that part of the game longer wouldn’t have improved the experience.

No, that wouldn’t make sense. It’s similar to suggesting we should focus on Luke Skywalker’s life as a farm boy on Tatooine instead of his journey as a Jedi.

Sarzynski points out that before the heist, the main character’s goals weren’t very clear. Simply wanting to “reach the top” in Night City isn’t specific enough, and after the expansion, this might not give players enough direction to keep the story moving. He also stresses that the scenes in this part of the game aren’t leftovers from earlier plans – the developers always intended to show the six months of V and Jackie’s friendship this way, from the very beginning.

Igor Sarzynski also recognizes that the connection between these two characters is a point of discussion among players. While some really appreciated the depth of their friendship, others didn’t feel it worked as well. Sarzynski himself thinks they struck a good balance in how they portrayed the relationship.

Sarzynski also clarified before Christmas that the elevator rides in Cyberpunk 2077 weren’t used to mask loading times. The game features a large, open world and its engine is capable of handling seamless building entry without needing to load screens in between.
