CS2 skin artist speaks out over rumored $35k payment from Valve for weapon skin

A designer who creates skins for Counter-Strike 2 recently revealed they received $35,000 from Valve after one of their weapon designs was included in the game. This payment is reportedly significantly less than what skin creators have earned from Valve in the past.

Counter-Strike 2 often features new weapon skins designed by players. Valve chooses popular designs from the community workshop and adds them to the game in collections and cases. Recently, a Desert Eagle skin by an artist named “React” was included in the Dead Hand Collection.

The claim that a creator received about $35,000 for a game skin started circulating on X (formerly Twitter). Although Valve hasn’t confirmed the amount, the reported payment sparked discussion due to previous issues with how skin creators were paid.

In the past, artists who created designs for Counter-Strike skins earned money based on how many cases containing their designs players opened. They received a portion of the revenue from those case key sales.

CS2 skin artist React responds to payout discussion

React commented on the situation with X, stating he was happy with how things turned out, but noted his payment was lower than what similar creators earned previously.

That’s true, but I also want to mention I’m still happy with how things turned out, especially considering I dedicated six years of my personal time to this. It’s tough when you see friends receiving different amounts, and it can be hard for others to understand that situation. But overall, I’m good.

He repeated that he wasn’t bothered by the payment, but explained that people often misinterpreted the situation surrounding it.

I realize I was wrong and didn’t see that before. Let me say it again – this is the tenth time I’ve explained. I’m pleased with the outcome, but it seems you, like others, don’t fully grasp what it means to miss out on opportunities for six years. Regarding the payment, if you knew exactly how much I received compared to typical situations, I think you’d understand my perspective.

My apologies, I missed that. Let me say it again. I’m glad things worked out, but it’s hard for others to grasp what it means to go without for six years. If you knew exactly how little I received compared to usual circumstances, I think you’d understand my situation better.

The posts gained traction quickly among Counter-Strike fans, who often discuss how Valve rewards creators who contribute to the game’s workshop.

One skin designer pointed out that anyone claiming $35,000 is a reasonable price for a CS2 skin doesn’t understand the immense time and dedication required to become a successful artist in the game. They explained that even talented professionals often spend years trying to break in without achieving success.

However, many felt the payment was reasonable. One artist explained, “It’s unusual to earn well as a graphic designer or artist, so getting paid $35,000 for just two pieces is a great opportunity.”

For years, Valve has used custom designs created by the Counter-Strike community. Artists submit their skin designs through the Steam Workshop, and if chosen, these designs are added to the game and become part of Counter-Strike’s official collections and in-game marketplace.

The company hasn’t revealed how much its creators are paid, so people in the community have been guessing.

Valve is also dealing with multiple lawsuits regarding the loot boxes in games like CS2, and they’ve responded strongly, refusing to back down.
