Crypto Market Makers in Crisis

Oh joy, the cryptocurrency market is crashing, and it’s all because market makers are having a bit of a meltdown ๐Ÿคฏ. According to Tom Lee, chairman of BitMine, these market makers have huge holes in their balance sheets, and it’s causing a liquidity crisis of epic proportions ๐Ÿ“‰.

In a recent interview with CNBC, Lee explained that the October 10 market crash, which saw a whopping $20 billion liquidated from the market (talk about a bad day ๐Ÿ˜ฑ), caught some market makers off-guard, leaving them with severe liquidity issues. It’s like they say: “pride comes before a fall,” and these market makers are paying the price ๐Ÿ’ธ.

With less capital to operate, market makers are shrinking their balance sheets faster than a teenager on a diet ๐Ÿ“‰. And when prices fall, they have to sell even more, creating a vicious cycle of doom ๐Ÿ”„. Lee likens it to a reflex: “reduce balance sheet, reduce trading, and if prices fall, sell more.” Yeah, it’s like a never-ending nightmare ๐Ÿ˜ณ.

Lee, who’s also the co-founder of Fundstrat, thinks that market makers are like central banks, providing liquidity to the market. And if they’re struggling, the whole market suffers ๐Ÿค. He warns that we might see more pain for a few more weeks until market makers get their act together, or until they get some help from… somewhere ๐Ÿค”.

Bitcoin, for example, was priced at over $121,000 before the crash and has since plummeted to $86,900. Ouch ๐Ÿ’ธ. Lee thinks it might take a couple of weeks for market makers to unwind their positions and for the market to start healing. But don’t worry, it’s not like we’re in a crypto-astrophe or anything… yet ๐Ÿ˜….

โ€œAnd so in 2022, it took eight weeks for that to really get flushed out. Weโ€™re only six weeks into it. So I kind of concur. I think crypto, Bitcoin and Ethereum are in some ways a leading indicator for equities because of that unwind. And now this sort of limping and weakened liquidity.โ€

There you have it, folks. Crypto market makers are in crisis, and it’s going to take a few weeks for the market to recover. In the meantime, let’s all just sit back, relax, and enjoy the rollercoaster ride ๐ŸŽ .
