Crunchyroll’s Kamen Rider Anime Issues Official Warning Amid Surge of Real Bear Attacks

I just saw a surprising warning attached to the newest episode of the anime Tojima Wants to Be…. It’s currently being streamed on Crunchyroll for those of us watching outside of Japan, and it definitely caught my attention.

The newest episode of Tojima Wants to Be a Kamen Rider, which aired on November 23rd, included a surprising public service announcement. During a fight scene where the main character, Tanzaburo Tojima, battles a bear, a message appeared on screen advising viewers that if they ever encounter a bear in real life, they should prioritize their safety and avoid trying to fight it.

Japan Warns Anime Fans About Fighting During Real-Life Bear Attacks

This isn’t the first time Tojima Wants to Be a Kamen Rider has included this type of warning. A similar message appeared at the start of the first episode, during a scene with a bear. It reminded viewers that the story is fictional and advised them not to fight a bear in real life, prioritizing their own safety.

While the warnings may seem like common sense, they’re being shown because bear attacks are actually increasing in areas of Northern Japan, like Akita prefecture. More campers and hikers are encountering bears, and bears are also being seen more often in towns and villages, likely because their natural habitat is disappearing.

Inspired by Yokusaru Shibata’s popular 2018 manga, this series offers a fresh take on the classic Kamen Rider franchise. It centers around Tanzaburo Tojima, a longtime Kamen Rider fan who always dreamed of becoming a hero like those he admired. When a series of crimes mirroring those from the original show begin to occur, 40-year-old Tojima reignites his childhood ambition and begins training to become a real Kamen Rider.

Since it first aired, Tojima Wants to Be a Kamen Rider has received high praise from both critics and viewers. Currently, the series has an 8.0/10 rating on IMDb, based on over 325 reviews. Reviewers often highlight the show’s clear passion for the original Kamen Rider series and its sequels, along with its gripping and character-focused storyline, as its strongest points.

I’m absolutely loving Tojima Wants to Be a Kamen Rider! It’s a fun little spin-off that doesn’t really connect to the main Kamen Rider series, which is totally fine with me. Honestly, after so many years and so many Kamen Rider shows and movies, it’s incredibly refreshing to see a series that doesn’t try to be super serious all the time. Fans have really embraced that, and I can see why – it’s just a blast!
