Cruise ship gets stranded near the island from Tom Hanks’ Cast Away

A cruise ship recently ran aground near the island featured in the 2000 film Cast Away, sparking talk of a potential remake starring Tom Hanks.

Directed by Robert Zemeckis, the film stars Tom Hanks as Chuck Noland, a FedEx worker who survives a plane crash and finds himself alone on a deserted island. With only a volleyball he names Wilson as a companion, Chuck must use his ingenuity to survive and find a way back home, utilizing items from the crashed plane.

Not only did Cast Away earn $430 million in theaters, but it also left a lasting mark on popular culture, influencing shows and films like Lost, Madagascar, and the upcoming movie Send Help, scheduled for release in 2025.

Interestingly, a cruise ship recently became stranded near the same island where the movie Cast Away, starring Tom Hanks and directed by Robert Zemeckis, was filmed.

The cruise ship ran aground in Fiji near Monuriki Island

The MV Fiji Princess ran aground near Monuriki Island on April 6th, after hitting a reef, according to its owner, Blue Lagoon Cruises.

I just read the company’s statement about what happened, and it sounds like everything was pretty calm when the ship first anchored. But then, a really strong, sudden storm – they’re calling it a squall – came through. That caused the anchor to slip and unfortunately, the ship drifted onto a reef and got stuck. They’re still looking into it, but that’s the gist of it so far.

I just saw on CTV News that the cruise ship finally offloaded its passengers – about 30 of them, along with all their stuff – using a ferry. Apparently, they’re also taking out all the fuel and oil to make sure nothing leaks and harms the environment, which is a good thing!

Luckily, the passengers didn’t end up stuck on the island for years, and they at least had their luggage. That was a much better situation than Tom Hanks’ character in the movie, who had to pull his own tooth with a rock and an ice skate!
