Cross Season 3’s Fate Revealed At Prime Video After Shocking Season 2 Ending

Now that season 2 has finished, Prime Video has announced plans for the future of the crime thriller, Cross.

Prime Video has ordered a third season of Cross, continuing the show with eight new episodes, the same number as its first two seasons.

Peter Friedlander, head of global television at Amazon MGM Studios, expressed his excitement about continuing the show with creator and executive producer Ben Watkins and the talented cast. He noted that Cross has resonated with viewers thanks to its complex characters, thrilling suspense, and emotionally impactful stories.

The Cross series has always kept viewers hooked with its complex characters, thrilling suspense, and relatable stories. Aldis Hodge has truly defined the role of Alex Cross, bringing the character to life with intelligence, emotion, and a strong presence. We’re excited to keep telling this story with Ben, our partners at Paramount Television Studios, and the talented cast, bringing James Patterson’s popular world to viewers around the globe on Prime Video.

Based on James Patterson’s popular Alex Cross novels, the show Cross follows detective Alex Cross as he investigates challenging cases and tracks down ruthless criminals. Season one revolved around the murder of an activist, and season two focused on a wealthy man who hired the FBI to protect him from a mysterious assassin.

The season finale, which aired on March 18th, featured a surprising twist: Cross decided to resign after learning the truth about Lance Durand. This decision will significantly impact the show’s future storylines.

Let me tell you, the cast of Cross is fantastic! You’ve got Aldis Hodge, Jeanine Mason, Wes Chatham, and Isaiah Mustafa leading the charge, supported by a great ensemble including Alona Tal, Juanita Jennings, Samantha Walkes, Caleb Elijah, Johnny Ray Gill, and Melody Hurd. And a fun addition for season two? Matthew Lillard! Yes, the Matthew Lillard from Scream and Scooby-Doo joins the mix as a character named Durand, and he’s a welcome face.

Hodge is taking on a role previously played by Morgan Freeman and Tyler Perry, who all portrayed the detective in the movies Kiss the Girls, Along Came a Spider, and Alex Cross, released between 1997 and 2012.

James Patterson, the author of more than 30 Alex Cross books, and Don Hodge are executive producers on the project, alongside producers including Benjamin Watkins, Craig Siebels, Sam Ernst, Aiyana White, Jim Dunn, Owen Shiflett, J. David Shanks, Patrick Santa, and Bill Robinson.

When Cross launched in 2024, it quickly attracted 40 million viewers on Prime Video within its first 20 days. By the end of 2025, Cross had become one of Prime Video’s most popular premieres, ranking as the third-highest viewed series launch ever.

The TV series Cross has generally received favorable reviews over its first two seasons, averaging 85% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics particularly praised the second season, giving it a 95% rating and describing the show as captivating, fascinating, and layered. Many reviewers highlighted Luke Hodge’s performance as a standout element of the series.

As a big fan of quality TV, I was thrilled when Cross swept the NAACP Image Awards in 2025, winning both Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Writing! It was awesome to see the whole cast – Hodge, Elijah, Hurd, and Mustafa, plus the incredible stunt team – get recognized with nominations too. And the accolades didn’t stop there – Hodge has also been nominated for awards from the Black Reel Awards for Television, the NAMIC Vision Awards, and the Gotham TV Awards. It’s great to see such a deserving show and its talented people getting the attention they deserve!

Cross seasons 1 and 2 are available to stream on Prime Video.
