Ben Watkins, the creator of Cross, has revealed what the surprising season 2 finale means for the show’s future. In the finale, Alex Cross rescued Lance Durand, the CEO of Crestbrook, but also uncovered Durand’s illegal operations involving undocumented children. This led to a disagreement with the FBI about the information, prompting Alex to quit his job as a detective.

Ahead of the season 2 finale, actor Watkins told ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan that Alex’s choice to quit the police force is a major moment for his character, setting up interesting developments for season 3. He also suggested the show will be bringing in a well-known villain from the original book series.

Ash Crossan asked about the overall direction of the series, particularly leading up to a significant event at the conclusion. He didn’t reveal details, but wanted to know what the creators had planned for the future.

That’s a good question. The turning point for the story is really about what comes next for our main character, Cross. We ended the second season with him questioning whether being a police officer is the best way for him to pursue his desire to protect people, and that sets up the central conflict for season three. We need a compelling case that will draw him back into detective work, while still acknowledging his initial reasons for leaving. We’ve also been subtly introducing a new villain, inspired by a classic antagonist from the book series, who will become a major threat in a future season. We’re continuing to develop that storyline.

By the end of season 2 of Cross, the main characters find themselves in dramatically different situations. Rebecca tragically jumped to her death after an attempt on Lance’s life failed, while Alex exposed the CEO’s crimes, even if it meant clashing with the FBI. Despite the precinct celebrating his work, Alex ultimately resigned because the case revealed widespread corruption within the law enforcement system.

According to Watkins, a third season of Cross might involve Alex rejoining the police force to investigate a significant case – one that could motivate him to return.
