The new Netflix show, Crime Scene Zero, features celebrities trying to solve fictional murder mysteries. They work as a team, using deduction, discussion, and improvisation to figure out who committed the crime, all for a chance to win a cash prize.
This variety show is actually the fifth season of the ‘Crime Scene’ series, but it’s the first time it’s being shown outside of Korea on Netflix. It’s the latest in a string of popular Korean reality shows, joining hits like ‘Zombieverse,’ ‘The Devil’s Plan,’ and ‘Physical: 100’.
The cast of Crime Scene Zero features returning favorites like Jang Jin, Jang Dong-min, Park Ji-yoon, and An Yu-jin, alongside some new actors. You can expect even more soon, as Part 2 will be released next Tuesday, September 30th.
The first four episodes of the show presented several new murder mysteries. Here’s a recap of the games, who won, and how everything unfolded. Be warned: this contains spoilers!
Crime Scene Zero general rules
Each game in Crime Scene Zero follows the same basic format:
- One detective, a detective’s assistant, and five possible suspects
- Everyone plays a character with a set backstory and alibi
- Everyone must tell the truth – except for the real culprit, who can lie
- At the end, the players vote for who they believe is the killer
- The suspect with the most votes is locked up. If they’re guilty, the players who voted for them each receive two million won (around $1,500). If they’re innocent, the killer takes the whole 10 million won prize pot (around $7200)
Here’s a summary of the first two cases from Crime Scene Zero, Episodes 1 through 4. It covers the suspects, their alibis, and how each mystery was solved.
Game 1 – Murder in the Abandoned Hospital
The first mystery revolves around Jang Je-in, a 46-year-old hospital director. She ran Yeonjidol Village Psychiatric Hospital, which was established in 2006, but vanished in 2013 when the hospital shut its doors.
She was found hanging from electrical wires on the outside of the hospital. The cause of death was significant blood loss, and she likely died between 10:20 PM and 11:30 PM. Her body was reported to authorities at 11:35 PM.
Game 1 – Suspects and alibis
Detective Jang Jin is heading the investigation, and his assistant, Kang Min-hee, is helping him by gathering important information. They’re currently focusing on five main suspects, and their reported alibis are listed below.
- Village Head Park (Park Sung-woong): Leader of Yeonjidol Village, where the hospital is situated
- Alibi: Busy running the eve festival, including a singing contest, ahead of inauguration day
- Cousin Jang (Jang Dong-min): Jang Je-in’s cousin and director of a mannequin factory
- Alibi: At home eating kimchi and drinking soju
- Doctor An (An Yu-jin): A physician who used to work with Jang Je-in in Seoul
- Alibi: Attending to a VIP patient
- Shaman Park (Park Ji-yoon): A spiritual guide from Yeonjidol and Jang Je-in’s old high school classmate
- Alibi: Praying at the shrine
- Pretty Boy Kim (Kim Ji-hoon): Jang Je-in’s boyfriend
- Alibi: Arrived at Yeonjidol Hotel around 11:40pm, after hearing the news
Game 1 – Results and the real killer
In the game, the detective gets two votes that help determine the outcome. The first vote happens after a preliminary hearing where players share their evidence. Following this presentation, Detective Jang identifies Shaman Park as the primary suspect.
Another round of clue-hunting unfolds, leading to the final votes, which are as follows:
- Doctor An chooses Village Head Park
- Shaman Park chooses Village Head Park
- Detective Jang chooses Shaman Park (again)
- Village Head Park chooses Cousin Jang
- Cousin Jang chooses Doctor An
- Pretty Boy Kim chooses Shaman Park
This means Shaman Park has the most votes, and the real killer is as follows:
- Shaman Park
Yes, Pretty Boy Kim and Detective Jang were correct, and are both awarded two million won each.
Game 2 – Murder at the Funeral Hall
The story’s second event unfolds at the funeral of Jang Breadwinner, the wealthy head of Jang’s Kimchi. While the Jang family is gathered to mourn, his son, 33-year-old Youngest Jang – who manages the company’s future planning – is discovered dead inside his father’s coffin.
The cause of death is currently unknown. It’s estimated the person died between 5:00 AM and 6:00 AM, as that was the only time the casket was left without anyone present.
Game 2 – Suspects and alibis
This case is led by Detective An (An Yu-jin), with her assistant Kang handling the case files. The files detail five main suspects, listed below with their reported alibis.
- Eldest Jang (Jang Jin): The executive director of Jang’s Kimchi and the victim’s older brother
- Alibi: Keeping vigil at the funeral parlor as chief mourner
- Daughter Jang (Jang Dong-min): The head of menu development at Jang’s Kimchi and the victim’s older sister
- Alibi: Present at the funeral throughout, drinking soju earlier
- Lover Kim (Kim Ji-hoon): A team leader at Jang’s Kimchi and the fiancé of Daughter Jang
- Alibi: Helping out at the funeral hall, waiting for the procession
- Wife Park (Park Ji-yoon): The widow of Breadwinner Jang and the victim’s mother
- Alibi: Greeting mourners and preparing for the procession
- Daughter-in-law Joo (Joo Hyun-young): The wife of the deceased son
- Alibi: Greeting mourners and handling condolence money
Game 2 – Results and the real killer
The detective received two votes in this investigation. Following the initial discussion, Detective An identified Lover Kim as the prime suspect.
Another round of clue-hunting unfolds, leading to the following final votes:
- Wife Park chooses Eldest Jang
- Eldest Jang chooses Daughter-in-law Joo
- Lover Kim chooses Daughter-in-law Joo
- Daughter-in-law Joo chooses Lover Kim
- Detective An chooses Daughter-in-law Joo
- Daughter Jang chooses Daughter-in-law Joo
This means Daughter-in-law Joo has the most votes. The real killer is as follows:
- Daughter-in-law Joo
The players who supported her – Kim, Jang’s daughter, and the eldest Jang – will each receive a prize of two million won. Detective An will receive one million won, which is approximately $700.
We’ll share all the details about the new mysteries and cases coming in Crime Scene Zero Part 2, which will be available on Netflix starting September 30th.
